Job description
Position Overview
The DeKalb County Solicitor-General’s Office is seeking an Investigator II to support its legal and investigative work in Morrow, Georgia. This role combines hands-on case investigation, witness coordination, court support, and lead-level coordination of assigned staff.
Key Duties
- Directs and organizes the day-to-day work of assigned team members.
- Checks in with the supervisor to confirm priorities and assignment direction.
- Plans and structures tasks to ensure work is completed efficiently.
- Tracks active work and reviews finished work for quality and completeness.
- Works with colleagues on complex issues and provides technical guidance when needed.
- Helps train staff on departmental policies and procedures.
- Supports supervision by escalating employee issues and sharing input on discipline and performance reviews.
- Assists Assistant Solicitors with investigations and trial preparation.
- Reviews case materials to determine investigative steps.
- Prepares and carries out search warrants or court orders related to evidence collection.
- Collects, secures, and evaluates evidence while preserving chain of custody.
- Helps interview victims and witnesses and documents scenes through surveys, photographs, and sketches.
- Uses investigative systems, tools, and resources to gather needed information.
- Compiles witness lists and coordinates with Assistant Solicitors on trial strategy.
- Provides testimony in court when required.
- Locates, serves, and follows up with subpoenas for complainants, suspects, victims, and both lay and expert witnesses in felony matters.
- Creates and manages witness files and works to secure full cooperation from victims and witnesses.
- Arranges witness travel and lodging and prepares material witness warrants when necessary.
- Partners with fugitive units to help apprehend witnesses and organizes court appearance schedules.
- Transports and protects attorneys, victims, advocates, and witnesses, including escorting attorneys during interviews and crime scene visits.
- Provides courtroom security and escorts trial participants to and from proceedings.
Required Qualifications
A bachelor’s degree in criminology or criminal justice is required. The role also calls for two years of experience in investigations, law enforcement, criminology, or a related area, or an equivalent mix of education, training, and experience that provides the needed knowledge and abilities.
License and Certification
Candidates must hold and keep a valid Georgia driver’s license and Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training Council (POST) certification.
Performance Aptitudes
The position requires strong data evaluation skills, sound judgment in assessing information, the ability to influence and persuade others to achieve goals, and the capacity to provide semi-formal training and serve as a lead person or team leader.
Compensation
Estimated pay is $65,000 to $75,000 per year, depending on experience.
