Job description

Role overview

This position sits within the Department for Business and Trade’s Export Support Service, the UK Government’s main trade support programme. Working from the department’s international network, the postholder will be a key contact for UK small and medium-sized enterprises looking to export to Australia and New Zealand, helping them access the right expertise, networks and opportunities.

The service is designed as a single entry point for UK businesses aiming to grow overseas. As an in-market delivery role within a network that spans more than 100 countries and 150+ locations, this job will help strengthen UK export value and support the country’s wider trade goals.

Key duties

  • Act as an initial contact for UK SMEs seeking support to enter the Australian and New Zealand markets, providing high-quality advisory guidance against agreed performance measures.
  • Review, assess and route company enquiries across a wide range of sectors to the appropriate team leads.
  • Hold discussions with UK businesses, including video meetings, to understand their needs and shape tailored market entry guidance.
  • Represent the Export Support Service and deliver excellent customer care for both internal and external stakeholders.
  • Create sector reports, market briefings and business intelligence materials that highlight trends, opportunities and practical advice for exporters.
  • Develop persuasive sector propositions that reflect the size and value of opportunities for UK companies, especially in FMCGs, Technology, Healthcare and Infrastructure.
  • Keep reports and market intelligence resources current and easy to find in a central repository.
  • Build and maintain an in-country contact base, such as distributors, buyers and end customers, to support introductions for UK businesses.
  • Provide coordination and logistics support for company visits, trade missions, exhibitions, conferences, ministerial visits and other DBT events.
  • Work closely with colleagues across APAC and the UK to improve service delivery, contribute to digital change initiatives, join project groups and share best practice and intelligence.
  • Develop, manage and nurture the local Overseas Referral Network of service providers that can offer follow-on support to UK firms setting up or trading in market.
  • Identify and assess potential ORN members, monitor satisfaction and keep the network up to date and effective.
  • Support a healthy pipeline of UK companies interested in the market and help ensure export account management processes are followed.
  • Connect businesses into ESS global, regional and Devolved Administration promotional activity to raise awareness of market opportunities.
  • Work as part of the cross-government team, collaborating with DBT, FCDO and other HMG colleagues to help UK companies enter or operate in the market.
  • Promote the Export Support Service internally across DBT and externally to increase engagement from UK SMEs.
  • Keep records accurate, track activities, assess outcomes and prepare reporting as required.
  • Monitor inboxes and direct messages to the right colleagues.
  • Carry out other administrative tasks as needed.
