Role Summary
The Insurance Eligibility/Verification Specialist supports a clinical office through administrative and front-office tasks related to insurance checks, referrals, and authorizations. This role works directly under the Revenue Cycle Manager and helps ensure that patient coverage information is accurate and that visits are processed smoothly.
Core Duties
- Secure referrals, authorizations, and eligibility confirmations required for office visits.
- Reach out to insurance carriers to confirm coverage details and verify whether providers participate in the plan.
- Investigate insurance or eligibility discrepancies and work toward resolution.
- Check coverage through online systems or by phone to identify services that are included or excluded.
- Estimate patient responsibility and help answer insurance-related questions.
- Spot mismatches in patient and insurance information that could slow down workflow.
- Explain plan benefits and expected out-of-pocket costs for appointments.
- Handle incoming calls and provide accurate information to callers.
- Keep referral slips, authorization records, and insurance documents organized and up to date.
- Take on additional work duties as assigned.
- Attend required staff meetings and in-service sessions.
- Follow HIPAA rules and complete annual HIPAA training.
Qualifications and Experience
- A high school diploma or GED is required.
- At least 1 year of relevant work experience is needed.
- Prior insurance verification experience is preferred.
- Experience with eCW is preferred.
- Working knowledge of spreadsheet software is expected.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills are important.
- Good interpersonal skills and a professional public-facing manner are needed.
- The candidate should be able to solve problems effectively and pay close attention to detail.
- Strong organization skills are necessary for this role.
Work Conditions
This is a sedentary office position in a climate-controlled medical setting. The work may occasionally involve walking, standing, bending, carrying light items, or driving. No unusual physical demands are required.
Courtesy, tact, and diplomacy are essential because the role involves frequent contact with people both inside and outside the organization to share information, build working relationships, and gain cooperation.
Work hours depend on office coverage needs, and the standard schedule is Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM.
