Job description

Role Overview

The Infrared (IR) Thermography Engineer is tasked with executing thermographic inspections and conducting condition monitoring on electrical transmission and distribution substations. This position ensures inspections are carried out safely, accurately, and promptly following established procedures, industry standards, and operational requirements, thereby supporting the reliability and soundness of electrical assets.

Key Responsibilities

  • Carry out infrared thermographic inspections of electrical substations for transmission and distribution.
  • Perform condition monitoring aligned with approved method statements and project specifications.
  • Work under supervision of the assigned Team Leader.
  • Detect thermal irregularities, unusual heating patterns, and possible equipment faults utilizing infrared thermography.
  • Interpret thermographic images and data to evaluate equipment conditions and suggest necessary corrective measures.
  • Immediately report any critical issues or abnormalities to the Team Leader.
  • Compile detailed thermography inspection reports and maintain accurate records and documentation.
  • Adhere strictly to safety procedures, including permit-to-work protocols concerning high-voltage installations.
  • Properly operate and maintain thermographic instruments according to manufacturer guidelines.
  • Ensure protection of plant and equipment from damage during inspections.
  • Engage in technical and safety training programs as required.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Possess a full-time Degree or Diploma in Electrical Engineering from an accredited university or college.
  • Have at least 5 years of experience in condition monitoring within electrical transmission and distribution substations.
  • Hands-on experience performing infrared thermographic inspections on high-voltage electrical equipment.
  • In-depth understanding of electrical transmission and distribution systems.

Skills & Knowledge

  • Expertise in infrared thermography application for electrical condition monitoring.
  • Competency in identifying, analyzing, and interpreting thermal patterns and equipment defects.
  • Strong understanding of high-voltage electrical system safety standards.
  • Proficient analytical, problem-solving, and report-writing capabilities.
  • Ability to function autonomously and collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams.
  • Familiarity with industry standards and best practices for electrical asset condition surveillance.

Certifications & Training

  • Mandatory certification: Thermography Level I from a recognized accredited institute.
  • Completion of training related to infrared thermography is required.
  • Submission of all certificates and training documentation for review upon request.

Health, Safety & Environment (HSE)

  • Full adherence to all health, safety, and environmental protocols.
  • Thorough awareness of hazards and risks relating to high-voltage electrical installations.
  • Strict compliance with approved work procedures, permit-to-work systems, and safety instructions at all times.
  • Prompt reporting of unsafe conditions, incidents, or equipment abnormalities to the Team Leader.
  • Ensure inspection operations do not damage plant or equipment.
