Job description

About the Role

The Queenstown Lakes District Council invites expressions of interest for an Independent Member position on its Smart Finance Committee. This Committee is crucial in ensuring strong financial management and oversight for the Council, monitoring the financial strategy and performance in line with the Long Term Plan and Annual Plan. It has delegated authority to determine financial matters and provides recommendations on major financial decisions to the Council.

The Committee currently includes Councillor Heath Copland (Chair), Councillor Samuel Belk, Councillors Niki Gladding, Nicola King, Matt Wong, and seeks one Independent Member to join their ranks.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver independent, objective advice to support sound financial decision-making.
  • Assess and monitor Council’s financial strategies and results against established plans.
  • Evaluate complex financial materials and engage in strategic financial discussions.
  • Maintain impartiality and independence at all times in fulfilling governance duties.

Candidate Profile and Requirements

  • Proven expertise in finance such as accounting, auditing, treasury, risk management, corporate finance, investment, or local government finance.
  • Strong financial literacy paired with analytical skills.
  • Experience within governance, advisory, or senior leadership roles.
  • Commitment to effective financial stewardship benefiting the Queenstown Lakes district.
  • Ability to provide independent, unbiased perspectives on financial matters.
