Independent Contractor - Translator

Role Overview

Chi-Chack is looking to build a candidate pool for translator opportunities across multiple languages. These assignments may support different government clients, and shortlisted candidates may be contacted when suitable openings arise.

This is an independent contractor role. The work can be done remotely, but applicants must be located within the United States. The listing indicates varying hours as needed.

Chi-Chack was established in 2007 and provides training, education, program management, and operational support services for government customers. The organization is headquartered in Tacoma, Washington, and operates with a nationwide team of training professionals and subject matter experts. It is also a Women Owned Small Business (WOSB).

Key Duties

• Translate written, digital, and multimedia content between English and one or more other languages.
• Handle a wide range of source material, including legal papers, medical records, policies, reports, video subtitles, and audio transcripts.
• Produce translations that are accurate, complete, and culturally appropriate while preserving the original tone, style, and meaning.
• Research terminology to ensure correct usage in specialized areas such as legal, medical, technical, and government-related content.
• Review and refine translated work for accuracy, consistency, and alignment with client or company standards.
• When needed, format translated files to mirror the original layout and design, including support with graphic design and desktop publishing tasks.
• Use translation tools, software, and related resources when appropriate to improve speed and quality.
• Maintain confidentiality and follow professional ethical standards throughout all assignments.

Required Qualifications

• Strong command of English plus at least one additional language, including speaking and listening proficiency.
• Ability to verify language ability through an industry-standard assessment.
• At least two years of experience in written translation.
• Must be a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident.
• Must be able to pass a background check or obtain a security clearance if a specific assignment requires it.

Preferred Qualifications

• Translation-related certifications are an advantage.
• Prior experience with specialized subject matter such as legal, medical, or technical translation is preferred.
• Comfort using translation and/or transcription software is beneficial.
• A degree in translation, linguistics, or a closely related subject is desirable.
• Active security clearance is a plus.

Work Conditions

• The role may require extended working hours.
• Travel may be necessary depending on assignment requirements.

Additional Information

This role is not available to candidates located outside the United States, even though the work itself is remote. The employer may adjust, add, or remove duties as business needs change, and may assign additional responsibilities as required.
