Job description
About the Role
Join the Marlborough branch of English Language Partners as a volunteer in a program dedicated to helping migrants and former refugees enhance their English speaking skills and integrate into New Zealand's culture. This rewarding volunteer position involves pairing one-on-one with learners to support their conversational English development in a diverse range of everyday contexts.
Responsibilities
Volunteers commit to meeting regularly in learners' homes, dedicating roughly an hour per session to interactive English conversation practice that includes cultural exchange about New Zealand customs. This engagement offers an opportunity for tutors to broaden their own cultural horizons alongside their learners.
Requirements
- No prior teaching or tutoring credentials are necessary, though any relevant experience is advantageous.
- English fluency is essential; other language skills are welcomed but not mandatory.
- A respectful and open-minded attitude towards cultural diversity, with patience, dependability, and a friendly nature.
- Full vaccination against COVID-19 is required.
- Successful completion of a police background check.
Training and Time Commitment
Volunteers must attend comprehensive training across three Saturdays in July, from 9 AM to 4 PM, held at Marlborough House in Blenheim. Following training, volunteers are expected to dedicate between one and three hours weekly for tutoring sessions.
Additional Information
- A contribution of $40 is requested from volunteers to help cover resource printing and training costs.
- Volunteer applications from individuals of all ages are encouraged, with consideration given on a case-by-case basis to younger applicants.
- If interested, initial contact is made via an expression of interest form followed by direct connection with the organization for further details and process guidance.
