Job description
About the Role
Neighborhood Legal Services of Los Angeles County (NLSLA) offers free legal support to more than 175,000 people and families every year through projects designed to widen access to justice. The organization views law as a tool for community change and is seeking a motivated attorney to join its work in protecting housing stability.
NLSLA is committed to a workplace that values different backgrounds, perspectives, and lived experiences. Candidates from all communities and abilities are encouraged to apply.
Position Overview
NLSLA is hiring an attorney within the first three years of practice for a two-year fellowship with the Home Preservation & Legacy Project. The fellowship focuses on helping low-income homeowners keep their homes by preventing foreclosure, counseling clients on loss mitigation, handling homeowner-fraud litigation, and leading outreach and education in client communities. The fellow may also work with the Trusts & Estates and Consumer Debt & Bankruptcy teams to support homeowners who are dealing with bankruptcy, debt, or estate-planning needs.
The role sits on NLSLA’s Strategic Advocacy & Litigation for Equity (SCALE) team, which works to remove barriers to housing and economic security, and reports to the Director of Litigation. This is a temporary, exempt position.
Work Arrangement and Travel
This role follows a hybrid schedule. Staff must be on-site at least two days each week, while the remaining time may be worked remotely when business needs permit. The department or manager may set specific in-office days to support collaboration and organizational goals.
Travel may be required to NLSLA offices, courthouses, and other locations across Los Angeles County.
What You Will Do
You will run clinics at partner locations to educate and advise low-income homeowners about foreclosure proceedings and loss-mitigation options, and you may help prepare loan-modification applications and connect clients with helpful resources.
You will negotiate, mediate, and litigate matters involving restoration of homeowner title, as well as cases related to equity-stripping schemes and scams.
You will also conduct outreach and education for mobile homeowners, collaborate with the Consumer Debt & Bankruptcy team and Trusts & Estates team when homeowner-related matters overlap, and help gather project data and results for funder reporting.
Additional Information
This is a 2-year fellowship for an attorney in the first three years of practice. The position is exempt and temporary.
Equal Opportunity
NLSLA welcomes applicants from all backgrounds and abilities and encourages all qualified candidates to apply.
