It is also the biggest non-NHS provider in this field, working across all four nations to deliver community nursing and hospice services, alongside practical information and support for dying, death, and bereavement. Through research and advocacy, the charity works to improve understanding of quality end-of-life care and to ensure that more people receive the support they need during the final stage of life.

At present, only about 10% of people approaching the end of life are reached by this support, and one in four people living with a terminal illness in the UK do not receive the care they deserve. The organisation’s five-year goal is to narrow this gap and improve access to end-of-life care for more people.

Role overview

This opportunity is for a Healthcare Assistant to join a multidisciplinary community team in the West Midlands. The postholder will deliver compassionate, person-centred end-of-life care in patients’ homes, helping provide comfort, dignity, and practical support when it matters most. The role also involves occasional work on the inpatient unit and is based within the community with a hospice base.

Key duties

You will support patients with a range of personal and clinical care needs, including monitoring skin condition and hygiene, helping with nutrition, promoting rest and sleep, assisting with mobility, maintaining a clean and orderly care environment, and contributing to symptom management. You will also communicate sensitively and professionally with patients and the people important to them, helping to maintain wellbeing through high-quality personal support.

Employment details

This is a permanent full-time position. The role operates Monday to Sunday, including bank holidays, with shifts rostered between 7:30am and 8:00pm.

The salary is £25,272 per year.

What the employer is looking for

The ideal candidate will have recent experience in a health or social care setting and an understanding of palliative and end-of-life care. Experience of delivering care in the community and contributing to person-centred assessments is also important. A compassionate, person-centred approach, the ability to build and review care plans for complex needs, emotional resilience, and the capability to work independently are all key attributes.

Holding an NVQ Level 2 in Health and Social Care, or an equivalent Level 2 qualification, is preferred but not required. A valid driving licence, access to a car, and willingness to travel up to 25 miles are essential.
