Role overview

St Joseph’s Centre in Shankill is looking for Healthcare Assistants with a strong interest in dementia support. The role suits someone who is adaptable, compassionate, and committed to delivering person-centred care.

What the employer is looking for

• Ability to stay flexible, communicate well, and handle multiple tasks when needed.
• Hands-on experience supporting older adults and people living with dementia.
• A care approach built around dignity, empathy, and the individual.
• Completion of FETAC Level 5 Healthcare Support Certificate.
• Full compliance with health and safety rules at all times.
• Good attention to detail and the confidence to work independently or within a team.
• A valid employment permit that allows work in Ireland.
• Two to three years of experience within Ireland’s healthcare system.

Key duties

• Provide high-quality physical and personal care to residents, following guidance from the staff nurse or CNM 2.
• Deliver care in a way that reflects person-centred values and respects each individual’s feelings.
• Use the “Being a Butterfly” approach and support care that reduces task-focused, impersonal interactions.
• Turn everyday care tasks into meaningful social engagement.
• Work with a calm, adaptable style that prioritises individual needs while meeting job requirements.
• Use positive, non-controlling communication and actions in all interactions.
• Bring spontaneity and help create positive moments for people.
• Help eliminate controlling care practices and “them and us” attitudes.
• Keep care records that clearly show daily person-centred support.
• Support the creation, implementation, and review of enriched care plans with the person’s family or relative where appropriate.
• Contribute positively to a team culture grounded in person-centred care.
• Work to improve individual well-being and reduce distress or ill-being.
• Support families, friends, and other supporters of people affected by dementia while maintaining a person-centred focus.
• Assist with food preparation and service, making mealtimes a social and enjoyable part of the day.
• Work alongside and support the volunteer team.
• Follow all health and safety legislation and workplace responsibilities.
• Take part in training, education, and professional development activities.
