Job description
Overview
We are seeking a motivated and meticulous Health & Safety Technician to join our team in Accra, supporting the promotion and enforcement of health, safety, and environmental standards within the workplace. Reporting to the Health & Safety Manager, the role focuses on ensuring compliance with legal and company safety regulations, conducting workplace inspections, assisting with incident investigations, and facilitating safety training initiatives.
Core Responsibilities
- Carry out regular inspections to detect hazards and suggest corrective measures.
- Assist in deploying and tracking the organization's Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) policies and protocols.
- Ensure adherence to occupational safety laws, company policies, and recognized industry practices.
- Help perform risk assessments, Job Hazard Analyses, and safety audits.
- Investigate workplace incidents, documenting results and supporting corrective follow-ups.
- Oversee appropriate use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and promote safe working habits.
- Organize or deliver safety inductions, toolbox discussions, and awareness programs for staff.
- Keep detailed records of safety inspections, incident reports, and regulatory compliance documentation.
- Conduct fire safety inspections and support emergency preparedness drills and evacuations.
- Maintain workplace cleanliness and housekeeping standards to enhance safety.
- Support environmental compliance efforts such as waste management and pollution control, where applicable.
- Collaborate with supervisors and workers to address safety issues and encourage continuous improvements.
- Participate in internal and external HSE audits and assist with implementing recommendations.
- Monitor compliance of contractors with site safety rules as needed.
- Stay informed about current occupational health and safety legislation and industry trends.
Qualifications and Experience
- Diploma or Bachelor's degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Science, Engineering, or related disciplines.
- Professional certifications such as NEBOSH, IOSH, OSHA, or ISO 45001 Internal Auditor are advantageous.
- At least 2 years of experience in health and safety, occupational safety, or environmental health roles.
- Solid understanding of occupational safety standards and risk management techniques.
- Hands-on experience conducting safety inspections, investigating incidents, and assessing risks.
- Knowledge of fire safety protocols and emergency response procedures.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Excellent report writing and documentation skills.
- Strong communication and interpersonal abilities.
- Sharp observational, analytical, and problem-solving aptitudes.
- Capability to influence safe behaviors across all employee levels and work independently managing multiple tasks.
