Health Officer

Role Overview

The Health Officer will spearhead the execution of HelpAge Ethiopia’s health initiatives in Assosa Zone, guaranteeing that elderly individuals, persons with disabilities, and other vulnerable groups receive accessible, inclusive, and quality primary healthcare as well as home-based care services. This position emphasizes enhancing community health services, particularly focusing on managing non-communicable diseases (NCDs) and providing integrated care tailored for older adults.

Close collaboration with organizations such as MdM Germany, local healthcare facilities, community groups, nutrition stakeholders, and government representatives is essential to reinforce referral mechanisms, implement integrated care strategies, and maintain accountability towards those served.

Key Responsibilities

• Implement and oversee health and safety programs within the designated area.
• Conduct regular inspections of the workplace to ensure compliance with pertinent national health regulations and internal standards.
• Deliver health education sessions and raise awareness within the community and among staff.
• Maintain comprehensive and accurate documentation of health incidents and interventions carried out.
• Collaborate closely with local health authorities and internal teams on initiatives aiming at prevention and responsive measures.
• Evaluate health risks daily, provide guidance on hygiene and sanitation standards.
• Support preparation and execution of emergency preparedness and response plans.
• Compile detailed reports and offer recommendations to management to improve health and safety outcomes.
• Work with multidisciplinary teams to foster a culture prioritizing health, safety, and wellness for all employees and visitors.

Qualifications and Experience

• In-depth understanding of public health principles, occupational health, as well as hygiene and sanitation protocols.
• Possession of a bachelor's degree in Medicine, Public Health, Nursing, or a related discipline; holding a master's degree in Public Health is advantageous.
• At least five years' professional experience in humanitarian health programming, especially in contexts focusing on older populations, NCD management, rehabilitation, or inclusive care for persons with disabilities.
• Technical proficiency with NCD management, International Care of Older People (ICOPE) methodology, WHO rehabilitation guidelines, and community-based health initiatives.
• Strong skills in coordination, training delivery, communication, data gathering, and reporting.
• Ability to operate effectively in remote or insecure environments.
• Fluency in English and relevant local languages is required.
