Job Summary

The Health Information Management (HIM) Specialist role focuses on preserving the accuracy and compliance of medical records. This position involves ensuring adherence to system-wide, state, federal, and regulatory standards through auditing, correcting, analyzing, reporting, and managing the release of information.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support the HIM Director with department oversight, monitoring staff performance and collecting relevant data for reporting purposes
  • Lead operational teams and conduct training for new personnel
  • Provide staffing coverage during absences and assist with recruitment efforts
  • Serve as a technical resource for HIM-related systems and technology
  • Conduct thorough reviews of medical records to ensure documentation meets all applicable policies, standards, and legal requirements
  • Compile and analyze data, track trends, and collaborate on improvement plans with the HIM Director
  • Investigate and resolve documentation discrepancies to maintain record completeness per internal policies
  • Perform quality assurance reviews of release of information procedures to comply with state and federal laws
  • Assist physicians in completing medical records and offer education regarding documentation and information technology requirements
  • Process amendment requests for medical records following all relevant policies and regulations
  • Carry out privacy walkthroughs and collaborate with the HIM Director on privacy compliance efforts

Qualifications and Desired Skills

  • Associate degree or equivalent with at least two years of additional work experience beyond the minimum qualification
  • Minimum of four years professional experience in health information management or related field
  • Preferred certification as a Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) or Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA)
  • Strong computer proficiency and skilled in word processing
  • Excellent critical thinking and analytical problem-solving abilities
  • Demonstrated competence in reviewing errors and troubleshooting issues
  • Outstanding customer service aptitude and ability to work with diverse stakeholders including physicians, nurses, and patients
