Job description
Role summary
An opportunity is available for an experienced and motivated Band 2 Health Care Support Worker to join the Ruperra, Ready to Go ward team at Royal Gwent Hospital in Newport. This is an internal vacancy and applications will only be considered from staff currently employed by Aneurin Bevan University Health Board.
The post is within a supportive ward environment focused on rehabilitation and discharge planning, where you will help patients move through their recovery phase with the best possible outcomes. You will work as part of a compassionate multidisciplinary team, supporting registered nurses and clinical leads while delivering patient-centred care.
What the role involves
You will carry out a variety of delegated duties involving both direct and indirect patient care. The position calls for someone who brings energy, commitment, a caring approach and a genuine interest in nursing support work. Strong communication, teamwork and a willingness to support service improvement are important for success in this post.
The ward operates every day of the week, around the clock, so the role requires flexibility to work within a full shift pattern. Depending on service needs, this may include nights, weekends, 12-hour shifts or a three-shift rota.
Team and development
Ruperra Ward is described as a welcoming team with a strong focus on high standards of care for patients, families and carers. The successful applicant will have good written and verbal communication skills, solid computer ability, and a positive attitude toward change and supporting colleagues.
Training and further development opportunities are available, with support for education and progression. The role is currently at Band 2, but it is under review as part of a national process and may move to Band 3 in future with an updated job description.
Additional information
This vacancy may close early at any time, including if it is filled through the internal redeployment process. If you are shortlisted, communication will be sent to the email address used in your application, so regular inbox checks are essential. A conditional offer and information pack will also be issued by email if you are successful at interview.
The Health Board supports flexible working and is legally smoke-free across all sites, with smoking prohibited for staff, contractors, patients and visitors. Support to stop smoking is available through the Help Me Quit team.
The salary scale for Band 3 has been adjusted under the NHS Agenda for Change pay award for 2026/2027 and is due to be implemented in August 2026, backdated to 01 April 2026 where applicable.
Application support and equality
Applications are welcomed from people with protected characteristics, including disabled and neurodiverse candidates and members of the Armed Forces Community. Welsh-language applications are encouraged and will not be treated less favourably than English-language applications.
If you need adjustments or support to take part in the recruitment process, you are encouraged to discuss this with the manager named in the advert. You do not need to share personal or medical details; simply explain what help would enable full participation. Alternative formats such as larger print or braille can be requested from the recruiting manager or the recruitment team.
Recruitment correspondence is sent by email, and applicants are asked to check their account regularly. The post currently cannot support a certificate of sponsorship because it does not meet Home Office criteria.
