Health and Safety Supervisor

Lakeland Steel Limited is an established New Zealand business operating in the engineering and materials handling equipment sectors. This position is central to strengthening a positive health, safety, and wellbeing culture across Lakeland Steel Limited and Morbark.

What you will do

• Keep health and safety policies and procedures up to date so the business continues to meet legal and regulatory obligations.
• Drive health and safety awareness through toolbox meetings, training sessions, coaching, and new staff inductions.
• Ensure contractor health and safety controls are in place, including site inductions and the required documentation.
• Record and report all health and safety incidents and events.
• Maintain the accident and incident register.
• Prepare health, safety, and wellbeing reports and statistics when needed.
• Arrange training and health checks for team members.
• Carry out audits covering PPE, plant and equipment, workshops, vehicles, and any other required checks.
• Review hazards, incidents, and near misses, keep the hazard and risk register current, and support incident investigations, including WorkSafe-notifiable events, to identify root causes and corrective actions.
• Attend site visits as required.
• Assist managers with return-to-work planning and injury rehabilitation support.

What we are looking for

• Previous experience in a health and safety role.
• A health and safety or business-related qualification is preferred, though not mandatory.
• Working knowledge of New Zealand workplace and occupational health and safety legislation, along with prior experience dealing with WorkSafe.
• Strong coaching and supervisory ability.
• Clear, accurate communication.
• Excellent people skills, with a friendly and approachable manner.
• Strong computer skills.
• Good planning, time management, and organisational ability.
• A thoughtful, empathetic approach, with strong listening skills and the ability to understand others.

Additional information

• A diploma-level or higher qualification in health and safety is an advantage, but it is not essential.
• The role is for 20 to 25 hours per week, with flexibility to increase hours during busy periods.
• A full, clean driver’s licence is required.
• A valid work visa is required.
