Role Overview

The Health and Safety Officer will play a key role in developing, implementing, and maintaining health and safety management systems that ensure compliance with UK legislation. The role promotes a culture of safety, working closely with managers and staff to minimize hazards, prevent accidents, and enhance overall health and safety performance.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure adherence to the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 and all applicable UK regulations.
  • Stay informed of legislative changes and advise management accordingly.
  • Assist in crafting, reviewing, and deploying health and safety policies, including safe work systems.
  • Perform and assess workplace risk, COSHH, and task-specific safety evaluations.
  • Recognize hazards and propose effective mitigation methods.
  • Support managerial efforts to implement risk control strategies.
  • Track and review the effectiveness of safety corrective and preventive measures.
  • Carry out routine inspections and safety audits of workplace environments.
  • Ensure compliance with safe working standards and company guidelines.
  • Generate inspection reports and monitor action resolution.
  • Take part in client, regulatory, and official certification audits.
  • Investigate accidents, incidents, near misses, and dangerous occurrences thoroughly.
  • Conduct root cause analyses and prepare comprehensive investigation documentation.
  • Recommend and facilitate corrective and preventive responses to avoid recurrence.
  • Ensure all incidents are logged per company protocol and RIDDOR regulations.
  • Deliver health and safety induction sessions for employees, contractors, and visitors.
  • Lead toolbox talks, safety briefings, and awareness initiatives.
  • Assist managers in building workforce safety skills and competence.
  • Encourage active employee engagement in safety programs.
  • Contribute to emergency preparedness and business continuity plans.
  • Organize emergency drills and tests of safety equipment.
  • Review and authorize contractor RAMS (Risk Assessments and Method Statements).
  • Monitor contractors’ safety performance and ensure compliance during operations.
  • Maintain comprehensive health and safety documentation and records.
  • Produce monthly safety performance reports and analyze safety KPIs to identify trends.
  • Provide safety data and actionable insights for management meetings.

Requirements

  • NEBOSH General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety.
  • Possession of a full UK driving licence.
  • At least two years’ experience in a health and safety position.
  • Experience with risk assessments and conducting workplace inspections.
  • Proficient in incident investigation and corrective action implementation.
  • Deep understanding of UK health and safety laws and best practices.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to influence all organizational levels.
  • Strong report writing and presentation capabilities.
  • Well-developed organizational and planning skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office tools.
  • Analytical mindset with problem-solving aptitude.
  • Capability to work independently while managing multiple tasks.
  • Desirable qualifications include NEBOSH Diploma, IOSH membership (TechIOSH or higher), and internal auditor certification.
  • Experience in manufacturing, engineering, or industrial settings is advantageous.
