Job description
Position Overview
This permanent, full-time position is part of the Health and Safety Team located primarily at the Petone campus, with responsibilities extending across all campuses of Whitireia and WelTec in Wellington, New Zealand. The role reports to the Team Leader Health and Safety and involves working collaboratively to embed and promote health and safety practices throughout the organization. The role offers exposure to multiple facets of health and safety within a complex environment, aligned with ongoing initiatives to unify systems and procedures across both institutions.
Primary Duties
- Respond promptly to safety incidents and conduct follow-up investigations as required.
- Collaborate with team members to develop and execute health and safety solutions.
- Champion organizational change by promoting positive safety behaviors and demonstrating commitment to health and safety.
- Coordinate and maintain records of health and safety training and revalidations through the electronic SharePoint system.
- Support the facilitation of the Health and Safety Representative network across campuses.
- Conduct comprehensive health and safety audits and reviews on all campuses, ensuring completion of corrective actions.
- Stay informed on health and safety legislation, regulations, and relevant program implementations.
- Engage with managers at various levels to ensure understanding of responsibilities relating to hazard and risk management.
- Assist the manager in preparing monthly reports for Joint Leadership Team (JLT) review.
Candidate Profile
The ideal applicant will possess health and safety experience with knowledge of the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015 and associated regulations. Strong customer orientation and excellent interpersonal abilities are essential for collaborating with diverse internal and external stakeholders. Advanced communication and computer skills are necessary for working across multiple campuses.
Essential Qualifications and Experience
- Relevant health and safety qualifications or a commitment to obtaining them.
- Accreditation from the New Zealand Institute of Safety Management (NZISM) or a willingness to work towards it.
- Prior experience as a Health and Safety Advisor or Coordinator.
- Demonstrated ability to persuade, coach, and influence others effectively.
- Capability to work autonomously and collaboratively on key projects.
- Strong organizational and prioritization skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and database management.
- Proven relationship and stakeholder management expertise, including negotiation abilities.
