Job description

Role overview

Nord Anglia International School Al Khor in Qatar is seeking an exceptional Head of Science with a Physics or Biology background to lead the Science Department. This is an opportunity to join a successful, growing school with a collaborative and supportive staff culture.

What you will do

You will shape and drive the department’s direction alongside senior leaders, building a clear vision for high standards and ongoing improvement. The role calls for strong leadership of people, with the ability to create a team culture where colleagues feel supported, challenged, and motivated to deliver excellent learning experiences.

You will be expected to strengthen professional relationships based on trust, respect, encouragement, and recognition, while leading improvement through honest self-review, quality assurance feedback, and focused action planning. Key management duties include handling resources, curriculum design, analysis of data, monitoring performance, delegating tasks, and running meetings effectively.

The role also requires you to build a learning environment where students feel inspired and stretched to achieve their best. Strong communication and motivation skills are essential, as you will help create energy, enthusiasm, and commitment across lessons and within the wider department.

You should be open to feedback, comfortable with change, and ready to share strong practice with colleagues. As a visible representative of the school, you will help develop new ways to connect with students and parents across Secondary and within the wider Nord Anglia Education network.

Because the school includes Sixth Form, experience with AS/A Level content is advantageous.

To satisfy Qatar visa requirements, applicants must hold a Bachelor’s degree and a teaching qualification completed through an in-person, non-online course.

Academic leadership responsibilities

You will lead the delivery, planning, review, assessment, and reporting of the Science curriculum, as well as support the professional growth of the teachers in your team. The school’s Secondary curriculum is based on the English National Curriculum and prepares students for IGCSE, AS, and A Level examinations.

Your approach should support a broad range of learners, including students for whom English is an additional language. You will need the flexibility to adapt planning so every student has a route to progress, with opportunities built around individual targets and varying starting points.

A collaborative mindset is important, as the role includes contributing to departmental improvement and sharing effective strategies with colleagues.

About the school

Nord Anglia International School Al Khor is a thriving international school with a committed staff team and a strong community focus. It serves more than 1,350 students aged 3 to 18, with around 530 learners aged 11 to 18 in Secondary. The school is located in Al Khor, about 35 minutes north of Doha.

The school teaches local and expatriate students through a tailored Secondary programme that combines the English National Curriculum with the Qatar Ministry of Education curriculum. It places emphasis on English language development, academic achievement, STEAM, Performing Arts, extracurricular opportunities, residential trips, and international awards.

NAISAK values student wellbeing, personalised learning, multicultural understanding, and global citizenship. The campus includes recently refurbished Primary facilities, a Secondary building opened in August 2019, and a new 25m outdoor pool.

Experience and qualifications

The school is looking for candidates with a degree in Physics or Biology, a recognised teaching qualification such as QTS, PGCE, or PGDE, and 6 to 9 years of teaching experience in the British curriculum. Strong knowledge of the English National Curriculum up to IGCSE is essential.

Desirable experience includes prior middle leadership, such as a Head of Subject role, a Master’s degree or other substantial professional development, and previous international school experience.

Personal qualities

The successful candidate should speak English fluently and lead with integrity, honesty, commitment, and a strong values-based mindset. Confidence, resilience, positivity, and a can-do attitude are important, along with strong relationship-building and communication skills.

You should be approachable, culturally sensitive, organised, able to manage your time well, flexible in changing situations, good at solving complex problems, and comfortable delegating responsibility. A sense of humour and calmness under pressure will also be important.

Application process

Applicants are asked to submit a CV, a two-page application letter, and details of three professional references through the school’s recruitment portal. One of the referees must be a current Principal or Head Teacher.

Interviews may take place at the school or via Microsoft Teams. Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted.
