Head of Platform Engineering

Role overview

An established and fast-growing Australian technology company is hiring a Head of Cloud & Platform Engineering to guide the next stage of its cloud and engineering platform growth. This position sits at the point where technology leadership, cloud architecture, and platform engineering meet.

You will collaborate closely with senior technology leaders to define cloud direction, strengthen engineering capabilities, and build a working environment that helps teams deliver with greater speed, safety, and effectiveness.

This is more than an infrastructure leadership role. The focus is on shaping a modern engineering mindset, expanding platform maturity, and ensuring the business is ready to support upcoming innovation, including AI-related initiatives.

Key responsibilities

• Direct a team spanning cloud platforms, DevOps, and technology operations.
• Create and implement the strategy for cloud and platform engineering.
• Work with engineering leadership to improve developer experience and delivery performance.
• Promote automation, consistent platform standards, and strong engineering practices.
• Advocate for cloud-native ways of working and platform-oriented thinking across the organisation.
• Offer architectural guidance and help steer future technology choices.
• Contribute to the growth of cloud capabilities that support product, data, and AI programs.
• Develop effective working relationships with stakeholders across technology, security, and the wider business.

About you

The ideal candidate will likely have grown from a background in Cloud Engineering, Platform Engineering, DevOps, or Cloud Architecture and moved into leadership positions covering both people management and technical outcomes.

• Proven experience leading cloud or platform engineering teams.
• History of delivering cloud transformation or modernisation initiatives.
• Strong practical knowledge of public cloud platforms such as AWS, GCP, and/or Azure.
• Hands-on experience with Kubernetes, Infrastructure as Code, and contemporary engineering methods.
• Solid understanding of platform engineering and how to enable developers effectively.
• Ability to influence stakeholders and guide teams through technology change.
• Pragmatic leadership style with a willingness to stay close to the work.
