Job description
About the role
Winstone Aggregates has supported New Zealand’s infrastructure and communities for over 150 years and is the country’s largest supplier of aggregates. As part of Fletcher Building’s Heavy Building Materials division, the business operates at significant scale and carries a strong responsibility to deliver commercially strong results while continuing to invest in sustainability, customers and people.
The company is now at an important stage in its growth and is looking for a Head of Finance & Commercial to work closely with the General Manager and senior leadership team. This role will help shape strategy, improve performance and support the next phase of business growth.
This is a senior leadership position for a finance professional with strong commercial judgement, the ability to simplify complex issues and the confidence to influence important decisions. The purpose of the role is to connect financial results, operational realities and market opportunities, then turn that insight into practical commercial decisions that improve business outcomes.
A key part of the role is trusted partnership: listening carefully, challenging constructively and helping leaders make decisions that are commercially sound, clearly understood and well supported. The role also carries a strong people leadership element, requiring you to lead and develop a capable commercial and finance team, build trust, strengthen capability and promote shared accountability.
Key responsibilities
- Work alongside the General Manager and senior leaders to shape strategy, pricing structures, investment priorities and commercial decisions.
- Bring structure and insight to planning, budgeting and forecasting processes.
- Support growth through pricing strategy, organic opportunities and carefully considered M&A activity.
- Develop clear commercial stories that explain business performance, risks and opportunities.
- Improve financial discipline, governance and decision-making frameworks.
- Lead, coach and grow a collaborative, high-performing commercial team.
- Drive the commercial thinking, insight and leadership needed to deliver ambitious EBIT growth and long-term sustainable performance.
What we are looking for
You will bring strong commercial depth, leadership maturity and the ability to influence across a complex business. You may already be working at senior leadership level, or be ready for a broader enterprise role that builds your path toward general management or a CFO position.
- Senior leadership experience in a complex and fast-moving business environment.
- Strong commercial and financial capability, with the ability to guide strategy and performance.
- Credibility with executives and operational leaders, along with the ability to build trust, challenge thinking and influence decisions without depending on formal authority.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to turn complexity into clear, practical insight.
- Experience spanning strategy, financial planning, controls and business performance.
- An adaptable, proactive approach and the ability to move thoughtfully while maintaining pace.
- A leadership style that builds trust, lifts capability and encourages a strong accountability culture across finance and the wider business.
What’s on offer
This role offers the chance to help shape a business with real scale, operational complexity and a direct contribution to New Zealand’s future infrastructure. You will be supported by an experienced leadership team and a wider organisation that values collaboration, safety and continuous improvement.
This opportunity is suited to a finance leader who brings perspective, commercial courage and the drive to shape outcomes that will have lasting impact.
Diversity and inclusion
Winstone Aggregates encourages candidates from all backgrounds to apply. The company recognises that people often hesitate unless they meet every requirement, and it welcomes individuality and a diverse range of experiences.
