Job description
Role overview
This is a senior leadership opportunity for a communications leader who can shape how mission-focused stories are planned, created, and shared across channels. The position is based in the United States and is posted on behalf of a partner organization that handles applications and the hiring process. In this role, you will build and guide a cohesive editorial approach that turns complex policy, advocacy, and program work into clear, engaging, and accessible messaging for wide audiences.
You will sit at the crossroads of content planning, editorial leadership, and digital communications. The role calls for setting the overall direction for content while maintaining a consistent voice and high standards across every channel. You will also lead a multidisciplinary team covering writing, digital content, and social media, and partner closely with program, development, and executive stakeholders to keep communications aligned with strategic priorities and campaigns.
This is a highly visible role where strong content strategy directly supports public engagement, advocacy results, and long-term mission impact.
Key accountabilities
- Create and direct a comprehensive editorial and content strategy that supports organizational priorities, campaigns, and advocacy objectives.
- Shape and maintain a consistent brand tone, messaging architecture, and editorial standards across all communication channels.
- Lead the development and production of high-value content such as articles, reports, newsletters, social posts, digital campaigns, and multimedia materials.
- Build and improve editorial processes, content calendars, and publishing operations to keep work timely, accurate, and consistent.
- Manage, coach, and grow a team of writers, digital content staff, and social media professionals.
- Work across departments with leadership, program, fundraising, and advocacy teams to turn complex subjects into content that is easy to understand and compelling.
- Monitor content performance across digital channels, including SEO, analytics, audience engagement, and distribution improvements.
- Protect editorial quality through fact-checking, review steps, and ethical storytelling practices.
Requirements
- A bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, or a closely related discipline is preferred, though equivalent professional experience may also be considered.
- At least 5 years of senior-level experience in editorial strategy, content development, or digital communications.
- At least 3 years of experience leading and developing creative or communications teams.
- Excellent editorial judgment along with strong writing, editing, and verbal communication abilities.
- Demonstrated success in building content strategies, brand messaging systems, and editorial governance structures.
- Experience converting policy, legal, research, or advocacy-heavy material into content that works for varied audiences.
- Strong planning and project management skills, including oversight of editorial workflows and content pipelines.
- Working knowledge of CMS platforms, digital analytics tools, SEO practices, and multi-channel publishing.
- Background in nonprofit, advocacy, or mission-driven communications is strongly preferred.
- A clear commitment to mission-oriented work and the ability to collaborate with a wide range of stakeholders.
- Capacity to balance multiple priorities in a fast-moving, high-impact communications environment.
Benefits
- Competitive compensation benchmarked against national nonprofit leadership pay and adjusted by geography.
- Health, dental, vision, and life insurance fully covered by the employer.
- Substantial paid time off, including holidays and extended vacation time.
- Paid parental leave and sabbatical opportunities after sustained service.
- Retirement savings plan with employer matching.
- Flexible or alternative work arrangements, subject to management approval.
- Annual funding for professional development plus support for remote work needs.
- Strong focus on work-life balance and sustainable workload practices.
- The chance to contribute to meaningful, high-impact communications and advocacy work.
