Job description
Role overview
TVNZ is looking for a senior leader to guide the next phase of its sport and major events business. This position owns the direction of sport strategy, the acquisition and production of premium sporting content, and the development of commercial partnerships that improve audience reach, revenue, and return on investment.
Reporting to the Chief News & Content Officer, the GM Sports, Events & Partnership will lead the sport content function, strengthen TVNZ’s sports partnerships strategy, and help deliver compelling viewer propositions that are both high-quality and commercially successful.
This is a significant leadership opportunity focused on shaping how sport and major events are sourced, produced, distributed, and monetised across Aotearoa. The role is offered as a 12-month fixed-term position due to the fast-moving nature of the sports media industry.
Key accountabilities
You will set and execute the sports strategy, working with senior stakeholders to secure local and international rights, oversee bidding activity, and identify new partnership opportunities. The role also requires ensuring sport and event productions meet strong editorial, operational, financial, legal, and policy standards.
You will collaborate across the business to create smooth audience experiences, grow engagement, unlock new commercial outcomes, and strengthen TVNZ’s position as a leading destination for sport and major event coverage.
Experience and knowledge
The role calls for deep experience in sport media, audience and fan engagement, and the production workflows used across television, video, streaming, and social platforms. You should also bring experience working with international broadcasters, handling productions ranging from smaller domestic events to large-scale international ones, and contributing to sports rights decisions through business cases, budgeting, licensing, content planning, or acquisition.
A strong network within New Zealand sporting organisations and confidence working with data are also important.
Personal qualities
TVNZ is seeking someone with a genuine passion for sport, a growth mindset, and a determined, solutions-focused approach. You should be creative, collaborative, resilient under pressure, and comfortable working across different cultures, disciplines, and seniority levels. Strong judgement, integrity, initiative, and leadership that encourages innovation and experimentation are essential.
Education
A qualification in broadcasting or journalism is preferred, or alternatively a relevant qualification in business or sport management.
Additional information
This role is based in Auckland, New Zealand and is full-time and onsite. Applicants are encouraged to apply early, as applications are being reviewed regularly. For more information about the opportunity, candidates may contact TVNZ’s Head of Talent Acquisitions, Philly Irvine, on 021 564 691.
