Role Overview

The City of Laredo is looking for a GIS Technician to support planning and zoning work through the creation and upkeep of maps and spatial records. The position focuses on zoning, historic, annexation, addressing, and street reference mapping, along with related geographic data tasks.

Key Duties

• Build address plats by using GIS software and drafting tools.
• Review new subdivision plats against existing GIS records and plats to keep the street name list current.
• Handle technical work involved in running, improving, and maintaining geographic information systems.
• Develop, edit, and maintain shapefiles and map layers used by the department.
• Produce analytical outputs from electronic data, including layered and linked maps plus associated tables, and help interpret those results for staff.
• Check GIS data for accuracy and completeness by researching and correcting maps and records from other sources.
• Carry out additional job-related duties as assigned.

Knowledge and Skills Needed

The role calls for familiarity with office systems, computer use, grammar, mapping tools, GIS workflows, city boundaries, and basic database practices. Strong organization, time management, adaptability, communication, collaboration, and the ability to work to deadlines are important. The technician should also be able to keep information confidential, understand plats and survey information, create and digitize geospatial data, and work through complex datasets.

Work Setting and Physical Demands

This is primarily sedentary office work, with occasional outdoor work and exposure to less favorable environmental conditions. The job may involve occasional, sometimes local, regional, or national travel, but no international travel. Physical demands are light, generally involving up to 10 pounds of force, with sitting most of the day and only occasional standing or walking.

Education and Experience

A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Geography or Information Systems is required, along with at least 1 year of experience working with geographic information systems. The listed accreditation reference is Council of Higher Education Accreditation (C.H.E.A.).

License Requirement

A valid Texas driver license is required. If the applicant currently has an out-of-state license, a Texas license must be obtained within 6 months of starting work.
