Job description

Overview

SNA International is looking for a capable and collaborative GIS Analyst to support work focused on forensics, biometrics, and identity intelligence. In this role, you will use geospatial research and field survey methods to help advance investigations and locate sites connected to missing military personnel. The position sits within DPAA’s Indo-Pacific Directorate.

Key Responsibilities

  • Carry out geospatial research and field survey work to move casework forward and help identify locations linked to missing military personnel.
  • Support communication with foreign officials, embassies, and casualty or mortuary offices.
  • Investigate cases that often rely on limited and scattered source material.
  • Perform advanced geospatial analysis related to missing American service members from earlier conflicts.
  • Handle a wide range of tasks such as documentary research, imagery georeferencing, data management, datum conversion, imagery acquisition, historical document review, secondary source analysis, geographically bounded studies, survey mapping, witness interviews, method recommendations, map creation, and briefings for agency leadership.
  • Contribute to investigations into MIAs through archive review, data analysis, and field research.
  • Act as a technical resource for geospatial methods and tools, including GIS, geophysical survey approaches, and remote sensing technology.
  • Provide GIS assistance for case development, including specialized mapping, imagery interpretation, image geo-rectification, GIS data upkeep, remote sensing support, and imagery collection.
  • Deliver geospatial analysis that combines geospatial, historical, and archaeological information to strengthen cases.
  • Work with researchers and other geospatial professionals and incorporate their findings into reports.
  • Support field operations with technical GIS and remote sensing input, and debrief field staff to improve case knowledge and reporting.
  • Travel nationally and internationally when required by the agency.
  • Work directly with clients and also operate independently.
  • Complete routine duties on your own while escalating unusual issues or deviations to a supervisor.
  • Follow all client policies and procedures.
  • Handle additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • A bachelor’s degree in anthropology, archaeology, geography, geology, or a related discipline, plus a GIS certificate from an accredited GIS/Geography program, or an equivalent mix of education and experience.
  • At least 1 year of experience in GIS-based field data collection in archaeology, anthropology, geography, geology, natural sciences, military operations, surveying, or a related area is preferred.
  • GISP certification is preferred.
  • Strong command of ESRI ArcGIS and related GIS applications.
  • Solid understanding of GIS concepts, principles, and analytical methods gained through education and relevant experience.
  • Ability to research cases with limited and fragmented source material.
  • Flexibility in research approach and the ability to adapt methods as needed.
  • Knowledge of professional writing styles developed through education or experience.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, supported by publications, technical reports, or conference presentations.
  • Comfortable working in austere field conditions.
  • Experience anticipating client needs and solving problems effectively.
  • Excellent attention to detail and strong recordkeeping habits.
  • Ability to prioritize, manage multiple tasks, and stay effective under pressure.
  • Proficiency with MS Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Adobe Acrobat.
  • History of initiative and measurable achievement.
  • Ability to work well both independently and as part of a team.
