Overview

Saint Mary’s University in Halifax, Nova Scotia is hiring a General Worker for its Facilities Management department. This is a permanent, full-time evening role within Bargaining Unit 179. Schedule

The role follows a Monday to Friday schedule from 3:00 pm to 11:00 pm.

Role Summary

Reporting to the Custodial Manager, the General Worker will support daily custodial and housekeeping operations across campus facilities. The role includes routine cleaning, event setup, moving furniture and equipment, and helping maintain safe, well-kept spaces for students, staff, and visitors.

Key Duties

  • Carry out cleaning tasks across assigned areas.
  • Sanitize, dust, and clean offices, classrooms, public spaces, residences, food service areas, athletic areas, washrooms, and other designated locations.
  • Maintain floors and carpets, both carpeted and non-carpeted, using the appropriate equipment.
  • Clean chalkboards and whiteboards.
  • Collect waste and recycling throughout the facility.
  • Prepare residence rooms for student and conference use.
  • Handle general housekeeping work.
  • Set up spaces for functions and events.
  • Move furniture and equipment as needed.
  • Report repair needs and maintenance issues to the Supervisor or Coordinator.
  • Escalate safety concerns to the Supervisor or Coordinator.
  • Look after custodial equipment and keep it in working order.
  • Stay up to date on custodial operating methods and safety procedures through training.

Experience and Education

Applicants should have Grade 11 high school certification and at least three months of related experience in a comparably sized institution or with a cleaning company. The university is also looking for someone who can work well with others, communicate clearly and positively, interact respectfully with customers, work independently with limited supervision, show initiative, and follow all health and safety rules and safe work practices to reduce the risk of injury or property damage.
