About the role
The NWT & Nunavut Chamber of Mines has represented the northern mining and exploration sector since 1967, working to promote the industry across northern communities, Canada, and international audiences. The organization connects with public and Indigenous governments, regulators, investors, communities, Indigenous organizations, non-governmental groups, media, schools, post-secondary institutions, and the general public to support responsible mineral development in the Northwest Territories and Nunavut.
The General Manager, Northwest Territories reports to the Ottawa-based CEO and plays a central role in service delivery, program execution, and Chamber operations in Yellowknife. This person also serves as a key contact for the NWT exploration and mining sector and provides advice to the CEO and Board on NWT-related matters.
Key duties
The role focuses on turning the Chamber’s strategy into action in the Northwest Territories, maintaining a strong office presence in Yellowknife, and ensuring organizational practices align with Chamber policies. The GM, NWT is also expected to support decision-making, coordinate activities, and help deliver Chamber priorities across both jurisdictions when needed.
- Put the strategic plan into practice and support the Chamber’s objectives in the NWT.
- Make operational decisions and develop programs in line with Chamber policies.
- Maintain a Chamber office and visible presence in Yellowknife.
- Advise the CEO and Board on NWT matters that may affect the organization or its members.
- Represent NWT member interests through board working groups and relevant regional organizations.
- Provide members and working groups with information that supports informed decisions.
- Prepare and present correspondence, briefings, research, and reports for Board and executive review.
- Escalate NWT member interests promptly for Board decisions, in keeping with policy, budget, and direction.
- Keep leadership informed on administrative, financial, legal, and procedural issues in the NWT.
- Research emerging or requested issues to support Chamber operations and decision-making.
- Identify and respond to NWT issues together with NWT members.
- Negotiate and manage funding or other agreements when directed by the CEO.
- Represent the Chamber at meetings and public forums.
- Organize, plan, and follow up on public meetings and community consultations.
- Work collaboratively with the GM, Nunavut.
- Support Chamber-wide communications and public awareness activities when requested.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with governments, land claim organizations, public institutions, industry groups, businesses, companies, and the general public.
- Represent the Chamber publicly in a professional and effective manner on NWT issues.
- Help maintain a strong public image through events, conferences, and activities in the North and across Canada, including the Nunavut Mining Symposium, Geoscience Forum, PDAC, and Round-up.
- Prepare and deliver presentations, speeches, and regulatory submissions for public and government audiences.
- Give interviews and write articles explaining Chamber positions and initiatives as they relate to the NWT.
- Prepare operational plans and budgets in consultation with the CEO, NWT members, and Chamber staff, then seek Board approval.
- Carry out approved plans and budgets, including grant/funding applications and required reporting to funding agencies.
- Support public awareness by taking part in trade shows, presentations, speeches, and by creating promotional and educational materials.
Education and experience
- A degree in geoscience, mining engineering, business management, political science, communications, education, social science, or a related area is required.
- Experience with elected boards and not-for-profit organizations is expected.
- Background working with governance and operational policies is required.
- Experience with multiple partners or funders, including industry, government, and Indigenous organizations, along with familiarity with their funding programs and processes, is needed.
- Experience in the minerals sector would be an advantage, as would experience managing events and operating a small office with limited support.
- Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.
Knowledge, skills, and abilities
- Understanding of northern and Indigenous communities, including their political, social, economic, and cultural context.
- Knowledge of the northern minerals sector, the mining lifecycle, and the potential for mineral development in the North.
- Ability to build and deliver integrated marketing, communications, and education plans.
- Comfort organizing and attending public events such as career fairs, conferences, and trade shows.
- Capability to work collaboratively in a geographically challenging environment.
- Strong teamwork skills for working with staff, volunteers, and partner organizations.
- Ability to develop and manage budgets within set parameters.
- Experience preparing funding applications and post-approval activity and annual reports.
- Proficiency with MS Office and social media.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including public speaking.
- Ability to work independently without daily supervision while still responding to CEO direction and feedback.
- Skill in turning complex topics into brief, clear briefing notes on short notice.
Working conditions
This is a full-time salaried position based in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories. Standard hours are Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., though evening and weekend work may be required for events and industry gatherings. Travel to northern communities may also be necessary.
The work schedule may change depending on operational demands, travel, or weather. The role may involve work in indoor and outdoor settings and in a range of weather conditions.
Physical demands
The job involves moderate physical effort and may include carrying moderately heavy boxes and display materials to events. The successful candidate may need to stand for long periods during presentations and trade shows, as well as sit for extended periods while using a computer or attending meetings. Travel by small aircraft may also be required.
Reporting structure
The position reports to the Ottawa-based CEO and works closely with the GM, Nunavut. There are no direct reports for this role.
Compensation and benefits
Salary will be based on the candidate’s background, education, and experience. The compensation package includes comprehensive benefits, RRSP matching, an annual performance-based bonus, and a northern allowance.
