Job description

Overview

The General Laborer I role entails active participation in the production team to meet operational goals efficiently and safely in an automotive recycling environment. This position emphasizes safe handling of vehicles to process core and scrap materials, assist customers with parts, and uphold environmental standards while consistently adhering to company policies with professionalism.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Maintain a constant focus on safety by following all protocols, wearing required personal protective equipment (PPE) properly, and promoting a safety-first culture collaboratively.
  • Comply thoroughly with all company policies to exemplify professionalism and set standards for peers.
  • Remove hazardous materials such as Freon, batteries, fluids including power steering and brake fluids, gasoline, coolant, waste oil, and catalytic converters according to established procedures.
  • Arrange vehicles on wheel stands to facilitate customer access to parts, and after use, clear and prepare the area for subsequent vehicles.
  • Disassemble various vehicle components such as motor and transmission mounts, tires, heater cores, copper wiring, and other specified materials in compliance with prescribed methods.
  • Manage the crush pad area to optimize equipment use, harvest core materials, and ensure environmental compliance is maintained.
  • Dismantle engines and transmissions, sort recyclable commodity materials, and handle other related tasks as directed.
  • Operate tire machinery to separate tires from wheels, remove tire weights and valve stems, categorize tires, and prepare vehicle rims for shipment.
  • Ensure cleanliness by collecting debris and harvested core materials, and maintain safety within customer zones.
  • Provide courteous customer assistance when needed, prepare shipment containers such as Gaylord boxes and pallets, maintain regulatory logs, manage stormwater devices, and support mechanical equipment upkeep.
  • Perform any additional tasks assigned by supervisors.

Work Environment and Conditions

Tasks are performed outdoors in a salvage yard exposed to variable weather, dust, automotive fluids, and noise. The role requires working during weekends, holidays, and peak sale periods, and strict compliance with safety rules and PPE usage is mandatory.

Required Qualifications

  • Ability to understand and follow both written and spoken instructions and comprehend safety signage concerning hazardous materials such as flammable fluids and waste oils.
  • Willingness and capability to work flexible hours including weekends, holidays, and potential overtime.
  • Capacity to endure a range of weather conditions for full shifts, including rain, snow, heat, or cold.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in automotive repair or dismantling, familiarity with the use of machinery and tools, and knowledge of automotive parts or retail customer interaction is advantageous.

Physical Demands

The role requires frequent standing, walking, bending, and stretching. Manual dexterity is important for tool handling and equipment operation. Routine lifting of objects up to 50 pounds is necessary. Good vision is essential for safe task performance.
