Job description
Role Overview
This position involves performing diverse labor tasks within a metal recycling environment, with responsibilities ranging from general maintenance to assisting technical personnel. It requires adaptability to work outdoors under various weather conditions and a willingness to acquire new skills aimed at progressing towards more specialized duties.
Primary Duties
- Handling unloading of pallets, boxes, and bundles efficiently.
- Sorting and moving materials by pushing, pulling, lifting, and filling conveyors or containers.
- Opening packages and separating different packaging materials such as plastics and zip ties.
- Taking apart small machinery, including cutting wires and removing components like bolts and parts from vehicles and appliances.
- Operating metal processing equipment including shears, band saws, and wire strippers.
- Directing vehicle traffic within the yard for safety and efficiency.
- Performing light maintenance tasks such as painting, scraping, moving equipment and furniture.
- Assisting with equipment repairs by selecting and installing machine parts in collaboration with technical staff.
- Maintaining cleanliness by sweeping, shoveling, and collecting debris regularly.
- Occasionally performing landscaping duties to maintain facility grounds.
- Ensuring work areas remain orderly and well-organized throughout the shift.
- Complying with attendance and punctuality expectations.
- Disposing of waste materials responsibly as per guidelines.
- Inspecting workspaces to ensure thorough cleanup and upkeep.
- Continuously engaging in effective housekeeping to promote safety and hygiene.
Qualifications
- Pre-April 2014 employees are considered qualified by default for this role.
- Successful completion of a medical physical exam and drug screening is required.
- Completion of background verification checks is mandatory.
- High school diploma, GED, or equivalent foreign education is preferred.
- Bilingual abilities in English and Spanish are advantageous.
- Capable of clear communication, understanding instructions (oral or written), and applying basic math skills pertinent to the role.
- Motivated to learn sorting metals, identifying features like color and size, maintaining equipment properly, and correctly using personal protective equipment (PPE).
Workplace Expectations and Conditions
- Adhere strictly to all federal, state, local, and company-specific safety, health, and environmental policies and procedures.
- Operate in an outdoor scrap metal yard setting, exposing workers to varying weather.
- Utilize yard machinery, hand tools, and personal protective equipment as required.

- Work involves sensory engagement including hearing, vision, smell, touch, and taste.
