Position Overview

The Veterinary Assistant will collaborate closely with veterinarians and technicians to support daily clinical activities. Responsibilities include caring for and comforting patients, maintaining medical and surgical equipment, preparing surgery rooms, performing administrative tasks, and assisting in treatments and diagnostics to ensure excellent patient care and client service.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide attentive and empathetic care to animal patients.
• Welcome pets and their owners, escort them to examination rooms, and collect vital signs like weight upon arrival.
• Assist designated veterinary technicians in triage, physical examinations, treatment administration, and medication delivery.
• Calm nervous or stressed animals during visits.
• Support doctors and technicians with restraint and medication administration.
• Conduct laboratory tests and capture radiographs as required.
• Operate and maintain hospital medical equipment, such as EKG machines, fluid and syringe pumps, anesthetic monitors, and scales.
• Fill prescriptions accurately, handle controlled substances securely, and maintain thorough documentation.
• Feed and groom patients according to veterinary or client instructions, monitoring intake and reporting any unusual signs or behaviors.
• Communicate clearly and kindly with clients to ensure their comfort and confidence in care.
• Inform clients about pet insurance, wellness plans, and medication options.
• Maintain cleanliness throughout the hospital, including disinfecting equipment, kennels, and facilities, and handling laundry with proper chemical safety measures.
• Provide bathing and grooming services for animals staying overnight before discharge.
• Adhere strictly to hospital safety protocols and wellness guidelines.
• Follow oral and written instructions carefully and maintain accurate medical records.
• Attend all scheduled shifts reliably, demonstrating a full-time commitment.
• Advocate hospital services and support organizational goals.
• Respond promptly and respectfully to directives from Doctors of Veterinary Medicine and Licensed Veterinary Technicians.
• Take on additional duties as assigned by management or specialty clinic areas (e.g., dentistry, surgery, emergency, radiology, cardiology, neurology, internal medicine).

Qualifications

• Must be at least 18 years old.
• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Previous experience in a veterinary setting is necessary.

Preferred Experience

• Background in general practice veterinary medicine is advantageous.

Schedule and Work Environment

This role requires working four 10-hour shifts per week with rotating Saturdays.

Compensation

Pay is competitive, ranging from $15.30 to $18.70 per hour.
