About the role
Hephata Diakonie offers a purpose-driven voluntary service where you can support people in day-to-day life, gain practical experience, and explore different career paths. The role is available as a Freiwilliges Soziales Jahr (FSJ) or Freiwilliges Ökologisches Jahr (FÖJ) and is designed to help you develop personally while contributing to meaningful work.
Work location and start
The assignment takes place in Schwalmstadt and at all Hephata locations. Working time is full-time. The start date can be arranged individually.

What you will do
During an FSJ or FÖJ, you typically spend around one year working in a social institution. The service gives you responsibility, useful first-hand insights into practice, and orientation for your future career. At Hephata Diakonie, you can get to know a wide range of fields and contribute to the everyday support of people and communities.
Your profile
- You are between 16 and 26 years old.
- No prior professional training or formal qualification is required.
- You are interested in hands-on work with people.
- You are willing to commit responsibly for at least 6 months, usually 12 months.
- You are open to new experiences, change, and social engagement.
Who can apply
The volunteer programs are open to all people. Participation does not depend on any church affiliation or state membership.
Benefits
- Monthly pocket and meal allowance of 420 euros for full-time participation; part-time roles are paid proportionally.
- 30 days of leave for a 12-month assignment.
- Usually, travel cost support for commuting to the placement site.
- Free meals, accommodation, and travel reimbursement during seminar sessions.
- Coverage of social security contributions, including health, pension, nursing care, and unemployment insurance, plus accident and liability insurance.
- Continuation of child benefit and half-or-full orphan pension payments.
- A qualified certificate at the end of the service.
- At least 25 educational days for a 12-month assignment.
- Educational and pedagogical support throughout the service.
