Job description

Role overview

This role supports railway construction activity by safeguarding track workers and contractors and making sure railroad rules are followed on site. Work is done outdoors in changing weather and environmental conditions, with a strong emphasis on safety.

The position is part of a safety-focused crew and contributes directly to keeping rail infrastructure ready for service. It is suited to someone who enjoys outdoor work, travel, and hands-on physical tasks.

Key duties

  • Enforce railway rules and regulations at construction sites.
  • Set up, use, and look after standard and specialized hand tools used for the job.
  • Remove damaged ties, spikes, anchors, and rails, and install replacements as needed.
  • Fix track surface issues, alignment problems, and gauge deviations.
  • Help install and repair street and railway crossings.
  • Support work on power-operated switches and insulated joints.
  • Unload ballast and assist with unloading, sorting, and distributing track materials.
  • Sort used track materials for loading, including hand loading when required.
  • Clear vegetation, brush, snow, and waste from the rail right-of-way.
  • Maintain drainage and complete site cleanup after work is finished.
  • Follow track safety standards, operating rules, and safe work procedures.

Working conditions

  • Shift-based schedule with overtime when needed.
  • Frequent travel is required, including overnight stays.
  • Most work happens outdoors in varied weather and site conditions.
  • The job involves repetitive physical activity.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lb regularly and up to 70 lb occasionally is required.
  • Good hand-eye coordination and grip strength are important.
  • All safe work procedures and company policies must be followed.

Requirements

  • Prior experience in similar working environments or in a regulated safety-focused setting.
  • Background operating heavy equipment and machinery.
  • Strong communication skills, including the ability to use radios effectively.
  • High school diploma, GED, or an equivalent qualification.
  • Valid driver’s licence.
  • Applicant must be at least 18 years old.
  • Must satisfy all medical fitness-for-duty and safety-related requirements.
  • Ability to work independently, adjust to changing situations, and manage stress.
  • Team-oriented attitude with the ability to maintain positive working relationships.
  • Commitment to delivering work that meets standards for quality, safety, productivity, and customer satisfaction.
  • Practical judgment and common-sense decision-making.
  • Strong hand-eye coordination and grasping ability.

Preferred background

  • Knowledge of signals or railroad operating rules is an asset.

Training and selection process

  • Selected candidates complete a paid four-week training program at CN Campus in Winnipeg, Manitoba.
  • The training is followed by additional on-the-job learning to support compliance with regulatory requirements and CN safety standards.
  • Completion of classroom and on-the-job training is required to remain employed in the role.
  • Selection includes a medical assessment covering drug, hearing, and vision checks.
  • A criminal background check is also part of the process.
  • An offer letter is issued to successful candidates.
