About the role
ABB is looking for a Field Service Engineer focused on System 800xA safety solutions in Doha, Qatar. In this position, you will carry out service assignments of low to medium complexity by following work instructions, ABB processes, quality requirements, and safety rules. The role calls for a strong sense of urgency, attention to detail, and a first-time-right mindset when working with customers.
This position reports to the LBL Service Delivery Manager and supports PAEN-Qatar, with PAEN as the main stakeholder. The working model is office-based / onsite.
Key responsibilities
- Work with customers at site to spot ways to improve operations and reduce recurring pain points.
- Carry out field service activities, diagnose technical problems, and perform analysis through remote or on-site support across service categories and products.
- Prepare the required materials list for each service job and confirm that all parts, tools, and equipment are ready and suitable for use.
- Investigate equipment and process breakdowns, recommend preventive and corrective actions, and suggest improvements to reduce future issues.
Qualifications and experience
- Graduate Engineer in Instrumentation, Electrical, or a related engineering discipline.
- At least 8 years of overall experience, including a minimum of 5 years in customer support, project, or service engineering for System 800xA-based safety systems, ideally in the Oil & Gas or Power & Water sector.
- Strong practical experience with System 800xA integrated control and safety systems, including both hardware and software, plus AC800M HI library-based application development for projects and commissioning.
- Working knowledge of Functional Safety Management Systems (FSMS) is required; Functional Safety certifications such as TUV FS Engineer or ABB certifications are preferred.
- Understanding of functional safety standards such as IEC 61511 and IEC 61508, along with practical system engineering experience.
- Hands-on exposure to industrial networking and network switch configuration.
- Experience with cyber security for 800xA-based systems.
- Ability to think analytically, take initiative, stay resilient, and adapt quickly in line with ABB’s advanced service and digital portfolio.
- Practical knowledge of industrial communication protocols such as Modbus RTU, Modbus TCP, and OPC.
