Job description
Role overview
This position is central to the coordination of administrative activity across the 62-day cancer pathway. The successful candidate will help ensure that patients move through diagnosis and treatment in a timely, organised and patient-focused way, while working in close partnership with the Clinical Nurse Specialist team. The role requires regular contact with patients, so clear, caring and professional communication is essential throughout the care journey.
Main purpose of the role
You will serve as an important contact for patients, carers and the multidisciplinary team, helping information flow effectively between services. A key part of the job is making sure patients remain updated at every stage of their pathway in a prompt, compassionate and reassuring manner.
Key responsibilities
- Arrange and manage patient appointments, including blood tests and diagnostic procedures.
- Follow up appointment dates proactively and monitor progress to support pathway timeframes.
- Keep patient tracking tools and records accurate, complete and current.
- Work with tertiary centres to follow onward referrals and ensure they are tracked appropriately.
- Collaborate with endoscopy, radiology and other diagnostic teams so patients progress through the pathway without unnecessary delay.
- Support audit work and help gather patient feedback through satisfaction surveys to improve the service.
- Assist in the triage of suspected cancer referrals so that all required investigations are captured.
- Help manage and monitor the shared inbox for the Colorectal Clinical Nurse Specialist team.
Working for the organisation
This role is not eligible for Skilled Worker visa sponsorship. Candidates must already have the legal right to work in the UK for the full length of the contract. Guided by values focused on excellence, teamwork, future readiness and compassionate care, the organisation continues to invest in services, facilities, sustainability and modern digital systems.
Person specification
Applicants should have administrative experience, ideally within the NHS. The role also requires experience of communicating with patients, including people affected by cancer, along with the ability to handle sensitive information professionally and with tact. Candidates should be comfortable working with Microsoft Office, managing complex data and systems, prioritising workload, and meeting strict deadlines.
Further skills and attributes
Other expectations include strong time management, the ability to work independently or as part of a team, confidence in working across organisational boundaries, and a willingness to learn. The successful candidate should be conscientious, proactive, self-motivated, diplomatic and able to maintain a professional, customer-focused approach. Travel to multiple sites may be required, and flexibility to support the service is expected.
Desirable experience
Helpful additional experience includes work in an NHS setting, familiarity with hospital patient administration systems, knowledge of cancer waiting times and related datasets, experience with multidisciplinary teams or senior clinicians, and call centre experience. Prior understanding of national cancer targets and cancer performance frameworks would also be advantageous.
