Role Overview

As a Writing and Communications Specialist, you will craft and communicate FamilySearch’s story across multiple channels including web, social media, email, blogs, public relations, and campaigns. The role demands persuasive and purposeful writing that fosters brand connection and audience engagement throughout the user journey from concept to publication.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop messaging strategies that effectively translate FamilySearch’s mission and brand into compelling narratives influencing diverse audiences, including family history enthusiasts and novices globally.
  • Create introductory copy and lead writing efforts for RootsTech promotional materials, event content, registration pages, and post-event communications.
  • Collaborate with engineering and engagement teams on UX copy to ensure product experiences align with brand stories.
  • Manage project trajectories from creative brief to final approval, ensuring smooth progress and high-quality output.
  • Work closely with marketing managers, designers, and product teams to align content with user needs and brand identity.
  • Implement SEO and AI-based optimization practices to maintain and enhance content discoverability across traditional and AI-driven search platforms.

Qualifications

  • Several years’ experience producing marketing and engagement content across digital channels including web, social, emails, blogs, paid campaigns; preference for candidates with backgrounds in nonprofits, agencies, advocacy, or cause marketing.
  • Expertise in persuasive copywriting adaptable across various formats and audiences, maintaining brand voice consistency.
  • Ability to create and apply messaging frameworks that uphold brand consistency.
  • Proficiency in business writing to translate complex ideas and data into clear materials for senior leadership communications.
  • Global communication skills adjusting copy naturally for diverse languages and cultures.
  • Project management capabilities to oversee creative and review processes effectively.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, engaging all organizational levels including senior leaders.
  • Bachelor’s degree in marketing, communications, or related area, or equivalent experience.
  • Fluency with Office 365 tools including Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Teams, Outlook, and OneNote.
  • Commitment to Family History Department’s five Quality Standards: Inspiration, Trust, Kindness, Effectiveness, and Simplicity, alongside adherence to FamilySearch Brand Standards.

Preferred Skills

  • Experience with AI optimization techniques and generative engine optimization to enhance content visibility in AI search environments.
  • UX writing expertise considering full user journey stages from arrival to progression.
  • On-page SEO knowledge.
  • Experience leveraging large language models and AI writing assistants effectively within editorial guidelines.
  • Familiarity with global audience communication across varied cultures.
  • Use of content optimization tools, analytics platforms, work management software, and content management systems.

Standards and Physical Requirements

Maintaining the high reputational standards of FamilySearch and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is essential. This includes rigorous adherence to approved brand and Church guidelines ensuring consistent tone, grammar, and style across all communications. The role requires ability to sit for extended periods and operate computer equipment.

Reporting and Employment Details

You will report directly to the Manager of the Writing Team. The position is full-time and onsite in Salt Lake City, Utah. Employment eligibility requires membership in The Church with a worthy temple recommend.
