Role overview

Babcock is seeking an experienced Fabricator Welder to work from Devonport, Auckland. In this hands-on position, you will support ship and shore-based operations by carrying out large-scale fabrication and welding work on high-grade metals, as well as building complex piping systems. The role is part of a skilled workshop team that values accuracy, safe working practices, and teamwork while using modern equipment.

This is a practical trade role with real impact. You will be trusted to make sound decisions, solve problems as they arise, and contribute ideas that improve day-to-day operations. The position also offers exposure to a variety of projects, chances to assist other teams, and support for ongoing skill development through planned training.

Compensation and work conditions

  • Pay is $46 per hour, with a trade certificate required.
  • Time worked beyond 40 hours is paid at 1.5 times the standard rate.
  • Time worked beyond 43 hours is paid at 2 times the standard rate.
  • Additional benefits are included.

What you will be doing

  • Perform heavy fabrication across steel, aluminium, stainless steel, and copper nickel.
  • Carry out TIG, MIG, and stick welding tasks to required standards.
  • Fabricate and mock up pipe systems for marine and industrial use.
  • Operate CNC profile cutters and hydraulic presses.
  • Read engineering drawings and turn them into accurate finished work.
  • Help improve workshop processes and follow SOP requirements.
  • Work closely with other teams when support is needed.
  • Identify hazards and maintain strong health, safety, and environmental compliance.

What we are looking for

We are looking for a confident fabricator who is comfortable in a busy, practical environment and can deliver high-quality work to tight tolerances. You should be able to work with heavy metals and workshop machinery, interpret technical drawings, and respond quickly to problems. A strong safety mindset, reliability, and a collaborative approach are essential.

Qualifications and experience

  • A Level 4 trade certificate in fabrication, or an equivalent qualification.
  • Relevant welding certifications.
  • At least 5 years of experience in marine or industrial fabrication.
  • A full New Zealand driver’s licence, minimum Class 1.
