Job description
About the Role
We are seeking an experienced Fabricator-Welder to join the fabrication team in Widnes, supporting the repair, upkeep, and refurbishment of waste containers. The position is practical and site-based, with a strong emphasis on producing work that is safe, durable, tidy, and ready for customer use.
This role sits within a fast-paced operational setting where quality, safety, and close attention to detail are essential. You will contribute to the smooth running of the fabrication yard and the wider maintenance function through a mix of welding, fabrication, and repair tasks.
Key Duties
- Perform welding, grinding, cutting, burning, and other fabrication tasks as directed by the Fabrications/Maintenance Manager.
- Repair and maintain waste containers so they remain functional, safe, and visually presentable for customers.
- Look after tools, machinery, and equipment to a high standard and report defects without delay.
- Work alongside the welding/fabrication team and authorised external contractors where needed.
- Check that work areas are free of hazards before beginning any task.
- Keep the fabrication yard clean, organised, and well maintained throughout the day.
- Assist the maintenance workshop with additional duties when required.
- Clear and tidy your work area at the end of each shift and follow safe working methods at all times.
- Complete required records and paperwork, including log sheets, tool inspections, inspection reports, and other documentation.
- Communicate in a professional manner with customers, colleagues, and site personnel while representing the company.
Health, Safety and Working Standards
Safety is a core part of the way work is carried out in this role. You will be expected to follow company procedures, wear the correct PPE, and complete hot work only in line with HSE guidance and permit-to-work requirements.
- Follow all company health and safety policies, procedures, and safe systems of work.
- Use PPE correctly at all times.
- Report hazards, unsafe situations, near misses, and incidents immediately to the Fabrications Manager.
- Take part in SHEQ workshop tours.
What We Are Looking For
The ideal candidate will bring solid fabrication and welding experience, sound practical judgement, and a strong commitment to safe working. This role suits someone who enjoys hands-on problem-solving and takes pride in high-quality workmanship.
This opportunity is also well suited to someone who wants a stable, active role in a busy business where the results of the work are visible and important.
Required Experience and Qualifications
- NVQ Level 2 or Level 3 in Fabrication & Welding, or an equivalent qualification.
- Demonstrated MIG welding experience; additional welding methods are an advantage.
- Ability to read and interpret technical drawings.
- Practical experience using grinders, cutting tools, and general fabrication equipment.
- Good knowledge of workshop health and safety practices.
- Strong hands-on and mechanical ability.
- High attention to detail and a commitment to quality output.
- Ability to work well alone and as part of a team.
- Strong troubleshooting skills.
- Dependable, proactive, and safety-conscious working style.
- Full UK driving licence where operationally needed.
Additional Useful Experience
- BS EN ISO 9606-1 welding qualification, or equivalent coding/certification.
- IPAF or PASMA certification for working at height.
- Forklift Truck licence, such as counterbalance or telehandler.
- Previous work in waste, recycling, manufacturing, or heavy engineering environments.
- Training in hot works and fire safety awareness.
- First Aid at Work certification.
