This permanent position is focused on strengthening community activity by enabling local groups and delivering Council-led events that contribute to the area’s vibrancy.

The role involves supporting community organisers to turn event ideas into reality, from festivals and cultural celebrations to sporting and arts events. In addition, you will take ownership of four signature Council events each year, handling planning, promotion, sponsorship, and delivery from start to finish.

You will partner closely with the Economic Development team and collaborate across the Council to ensure events reflect the character of Ashburton and support local growth.

Key duties

  • Identify, promote, and manage Council events throughout the district.
  • Review, approve, and assist with community-led event development.
  • Support community organisations in planning and delivering event ideas.
  • Lead the planning, marketing, sponsorship, and delivery of four major Council-run events annually.
  • Work with internal teams and external stakeholders to keep event activity aligned with community goals.
  • Handle administrative and compliance tasks related to event delivery.

What you will bring

  • Strong enthusiasm for community engagement and event delivery.
  • Well-developed project coordination and organisational skills.
  • Experience working with sponsors, partners, and a wide range of stakeholders.
  • A proactive, creative, solutions-focused mindset.
  • Solid administration and compliance capability.
  • Confident communication and relationship-building skills.
  • Willingness to work outside standard hours when events require it.

Why work here

You will be based in Te Whare Whakatere, Ashburton District Council’s new building, and join a supportive, friendly team. The district also offers an appealing lifestyle with access to Mt Hutt, Lake Hood, and Christchurch nearby.

Benefits

  • Opportunities for professional development.
  • Annual performance and pay reviews.
  • Flexible work arrangements.
  • Health and wellbeing support.
  • Birthday leave plus the option to purchase additional leave.
  • Service recognition rewards.
  • A sociable, family-friendly workplace culture.
