About the Company
Darby Doors, established in 1982, manufactures and distributes doors, millwork, hardware, bath accessories, and building specialty products throughout the eastern United States. Headquartered in Florence, Alabama, the company also operates Total Trim, which offers installation services for Darby Doors products.
Role Summary
The Estimator is responsible for preparing material estimates for home construction using computer systems and math skills, while following company procedures and local building code requirements.
Key Responsibilities
- Calculate the quantity of materials required for residential construction in line with company standards and local code.
- Support sales staff by helping with customer orders and material lists when needed.
- Handle trim take-offs as requested.
- Provide guidance and support to contractors as required.
- Train sales representatives on estimating methods and best practices.
- Assist sales teams with reading blueprints and understanding construction processes.
- Compare estimated material usage with actual usage after project completion.
- Support the hardware counter or sales counter as assigned.
- Monitor expenses to stay within budget guidelines.
General Job Duties

- Complete all required training assignments.
Education and Experience
- An associate degree in engineering or a related field is required.
- 1 to 3 years of experience in construction or building materials is required.
Skills and Abilities
- Strong blueprint reading and technical document interpretation skills.
- Ability to analyze building plans, diagrams, and both abstract and concrete variables.
- Comfort using networked computer systems and specialized software.
- Ability to teach others how to use application software effectively.
- Excellent verbal communication and strong interpersonal skills.
- Good understanding of measurements and basic mathematics.
