Role overview
Our client’s engineering operation in Kent is looking for an Estimator/Buyer to support the Supply Chain Manager with the purchase of materials and related supply chain activities. The position focuses on reviewing order needs, supplier details, and cost information to help keep procurement and supplier management running smoothly and efficiently.
Key responsibilities
- Work with suppliers and internal teams to collect quotations that include a clear breakdown of costs.
- Create purchase orders and purchase requisitions as required.
- Prepare requests for information and requests for quotation, including structured cost breakdown formats.
- Build manufacturing estimates for the sales and engineering functions.
- Coordinate with the engineering team on supplier shortlisting and selection.
- Partner with the quality team to track and review vendor performance.
- Handle invoice-related issues and queries promptly.
- Approach prospective suppliers to obtain details on pricing, delivery timelines, and operational capability.
- Produce purchasing reports and side-by-side quotation comparisons.
- Supply data that supports regular and accurate supplier performance reviews.
- Move orders forward and assist with import clearance work.
- Take on other business support tasks as needed.
Required experience and skills
- Previous experience in an engineering procurement role.
- Confidence working in a fast-paced environment that changes frequently.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving ability, especially when handling complex situations with several moving parts.
- Excellent communication and negotiation skills.
- Solid understanding of engineering language and manufacturing processes.
- Experience using MRP-generated purchase orders and independent requisitions.
Compensation and benefits
The role follows a Monday to Friday schedule with a 37-hour work week. The salary range is £29,000 to £33,000 per year, depending on experience. Additional benefits include a 9-day fortnight with every other Friday off, a company profit-sharing arrangement, a stakeholder pension, a death-in-service benefit, and an employee rewards and recognition programme.
