Role overview
London Borough of Sutton is looking to appoint a tutor for the ESOL Entry 1 Writing Award (Ascentis) at Sutton College. The programme is designed to strengthen learners’ everyday written English, helping them become more confident in writing for practical, work-related and study-related situations.
Schedule and delivery
The role starts on 08/09/2026. Teaching takes place on Tuesdays from 09:30 to 11:30, for 38 weeks during term time only.

Course purpose
This course supports adult learners in developing core English writing skills for daily use. It focuses on writing short, clear sentences, using punctuation correctly, improving spelling, and expanding vocabulary. The overall aim is to increase confidence in written English and help learners communicate more effectively in everyday life, at work, and in further education.
Learner outcomes
- Produce basic words and simple sentences in writing
- Improve spelling and use punctuation more accurately
- Handle common writing tasks such as filling in forms and sending messages
- Gain greater confidence in written communication
Qualifications and experience
Applicants are expected to hold a recognised teaching qualification such as CELTA, CertTESOL, PGCE, or an equivalent award. A minimum of a Level 3 qualification in English, or an equivalent standard, is also required. The ideal candidate will have experience teaching ESOL to adults in classroom or community settings, supporting learners towards ESOL Skills for Life or similar accredited qualifications, and delivering learning through online or blended formats.
Salary and closing details
The post is graded at Grade 7 (SCP 33). The closing date is 12/07/2026, although the employer may close the vacancy earlier if enough suitable applications are received. The interview is scheduled for w/c 20/07/2026.
