Job description

Overview

At carbmee, most emissions datasets are inherently incomplete, and the distinction between an approximate estimate and a defensible carbon footprint relies heavily on effective modeling of missing data. As an ESG Data Scientist, you will develop and refine models and inference mechanisms that enable the carbmee EIS™ platform to transform fragmented customer and supplier data into precise Corporate, Supply Chain, and Product carbon footprints at scale.

Key Responsibilities

  • Create and optimize machine learning models and large language model (LLM)-based workflows to enhance coverage, precision, and inference of emissions data, especially for incomplete supplier or product inputs.
  • Architect the logic framework that manages real-world data deficiencies such as missing weights, inconsistent units, and unmatched commodities often found in customer ERP exports.
  • Utilize LLM-assisted data mapping technologies extensively—leveraging tools like Claude—and engineer validation systems to prevent erroneous mappings from affecting customer data.
  • Design and assess models aligned with the GHG Protocol framework, particularly ensuring proper handling of Scope 3.1/3.4 in Supply Chain Carbon Footprints, so outputs maintain both statistical reliability and methodological integrity.
  • Evaluate model effectiveness across various customer implementations, adapting and refining models to suit sector-specific data nuances swiftly.
  • Communicate model results and confidence levels effectively, enabling sustainability and technical teams to understand and act upon insights.
  • Collaborate closely with product engineering teams to integrate validated modelling methodologies into the core EIS™ platform.

Candidate Profile

We welcome applicants at associate or senior levels:

  • Associate candidates should possess strong quantitative skills in statistics, applied machine learning, or data science, along with hands-on experience building models in academic, internship, or early career settings, and a keen interest in sustainability and carbon accounting.
  • Senior candidates must demonstrate a history of deploying ML models in production environments, ideally involving noisy or incomplete datasets, and be equipped to make impactful modelling decisions linked to business outcomes.

Additional qualifications:

  • Proficiency in Python programming, a solid understanding of statistics and applied machine learning, and competence in SQL for handling enterprise-scale data.
  • Experience with LLM-based workflows and prompt/pipeline design is highly desirable.
  • Comfort navigating ambiguous and partial data sets, with an inclination to transparently highlight limitations rather than obscure them.
  • Knowledge of the GHG Protocol or carbon accounting principles, with a strong commitment to developing domain expertise.
  • Ability to clearly articulate modeling compromises to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • A degree in Data Science, Statistics, Computer Science, or a related quantitative discipline, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Fluency in English and German languages.
  • Residency in Munich, Bavaria, Germany.

Perks and Benefits

  • Engagement in a unique and impactful mission addressing climate change through advanced carbon management technologies.
  • A rewarding compensation package featuring virtual stock options and opportunities for ownership from day one.
  • Health and wellness support including an Urban Sports Club membership and 1:1 mental health coaching via Nilohealth.
  • Flexibility provided by a hybrid working model and access to vibrant office locations in central Berlin and Munich.
  • A transparent team culture emphasizing humility, accountability, and a fun collaborative environment.
  • Regular team-building events to facilitate networking and strengthen cross-functional relationships.
  • Open communication through monthly company-wide meetings, newsletters, and direct Q&A sessions with the founders, ensuring transparency regarding company goals and performance.
