Job Overview
The Environmental & Sustainability Superintendent role involves overseeing environmental compliance, safeguarding natural resources, and ensuring the organization's activities conform fully to both regulatory demands and company policies. This senior position calls for a blend of technical expertise, leadership capabilities, and regulatory insight.
Key Responsibilities
- Ensure strict adherence to local environmental laws, including those mandated by the Saudi National Center for Environmental Compliance, as well as international frameworks such as ISO 14001.
- Manage all relevant environmental permits, licenses, and approvals while maintaining effective communication with regulatory bodies and government entities.
- Develop, implement, and sustain an Environmental Management System (EMS) in line with ISO 14001 standards, including establishing procedures, policies, and key performance indicators (KPIs).
- Conduct audits and inspections to verify environmental compliance and system effectiveness.
- Continuously monitor air emissions, water discharges, and waste handling processes, preparing timely monthly, annual, and regulatory environmental reports.
- Track critical environmental performance metrics such as emissions, spills, and waste quantities.
- Formulate and maintain spill prevention strategies, lead response efforts to environmental incidents like oil spills or chemical leaks, and perform root cause analyses after incidents.
- Supervise the management, treatment, and disposal of hazardous and non-hazardous wastes, including produced water and drilling wastes.
- Drive pollution prevention and sustainability programs within operations.
- Identify environmental risks associated with activities including drilling, production, and pipeline management and conduct Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA) with recommendations for mitigating actions.
- Engage proactively with internal teams and maintain communication channels with external stakeholders, regulatory agencies, and local communities.
Qualifications and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering or a related field.
- At least 10 years experience in environmental roles specifically within the oil and gas industry.
- Certification as an ISO 14001 Lead Auditor.
- NEBOSH Environmental Certificate holder.
- Valid Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) certifications.
- Comprehensive understanding of environmental legislation and regulations.
- Proficient in environmental risk assessment and incident investigation procedures.
- Demonstrated leadership and personnel management skills.
- Strong competence in data analysis and environmental reporting.
- Effective communicator capable of managing various stakeholder relationships.
