Job description

Role Overview

The Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Specialist is accountable for recognizing and evaluating safety, health, and environmental concerns, seeking continual performance improvements by establishing and enforcing prevention-centered programs. The role oversees all compliance functions including investigations, compliance monitoring, training, and education to ensure safe operations and adherence to EHS policies.

Core Duties

  • Lead emergency and hazard response initiatives.
  • Conduct and support thorough EHS investigations, ensuring all required reporting, root cause analysis, corrective actions, and follow-ups are completed effectively.
  • Oversee compliance monitoring for ongoing and upcoming production activities aligning with EHS laws and regulations.
  • Stay current with changes in federal, provincial, and municipal EHS legislation and permits, advising management accordingly to maintain operational compliance.
  • Design, develop, and deliver EHS education programs, trainings, and certifications.
  • Ensure routine EHS inspections are conducted and follow-up measures are enforced.
  • Drive continuous improvement in policies and EHS programs through initiative development.
  • Contribute to Loss Management policy and procedural implementation at Motor Coach Industries.
  • Evaluate and advise on EHS aspects relating to products and facility projects; prepare comprehensive reports and recommendations.
  • Monitor employee exposure levels related to manufacturing processes.
  • Administer elements of the waste management system, including oversight of air emissions, hazardous waste disposal, chemical storage, and water discharge compliance.
  • Maintain accurate statistical tracking and reporting to support environmental and safety reduction goals.
  • Ensure compliance with ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 registration standards.
  • Support the Laser Safety Officer to uphold laser safety protocols.
  • Assist satellite locations as needed with EHS responsibilities.
  • Participate in safety-related meetings, internal audits, and the Joint Health and Safety Committee.
  • Adhere to all occupational safety, health regulations, life safety codes, CSA standards, and applicable laws.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Degree or diploma in Occupational Safety and Health.
  • Health & Safety certification is preferred.
  • First Aid training certification.
  • At least two years of direct EHS experience in a manufacturing environment.
  • Working knowledge of CSA standards and environmental regulations at federal, provincial, and municipal levels.
  • Understanding of workplace safety legislation, fire codes, building codes, and life safety requirements.

Skills and Tools

  • Proficient with air quality testing instruments and common workplace computers.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, analytical, and organizational capabilities.
  • Advanced skills in Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Additional Details

  • Travel requirement approximately 10%, including trips to the United States.
