Role Summary
The Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) Officer will help build and sustain a strong health, safety, and environmental culture across Splitstone and The Lunch Bag. This role focuses on regulatory compliance, management systems, audits, risk assessments, and improvement initiatives that support a safe and sustainable workplace.
Key Responsibilities
Health & Safety
- Assist with the rollout, upkeep, and ongoing development of the ISO 45001 Occupational Health and Safety Management System.
- Carry out health and safety risk assessments and make sure suitable controls are in place and regularly checked.
- Maintain and update Safety Statements and related risk assessments for both Production and School Meal Services.
- Track compliance with health and safety laws and Health and Safety Authority (HSA) obligations.
- Serve as a main contact for health and safety matters across the organisation.
- Monitor, evaluate, and report on health and safety KPIs and performance data.
- Ensure incidents, accidents, and near misses are recorded, investigated, and followed through with corrective actions.
- Create, review, and improve health and safety policies, procedures, work instructions, and checklists.
- Identify training needs and provide coaching, training, and practical support where required.
- Keep all health and safety training records and related documentation current and complete.
- Encourage employee involvement and consultation in health and safety activities, including meetings, audits, and risk assessments.
- Coordinate emergency preparedness work such as evacuation plans, emergency response arrangements, and fire drills.
Auditing & Compliance
- Perform internal audits according to the agreed audit schedule.
- Record audit results and make sure corrective and preventive actions are implemented and monitored.
- Support external audits, inspections, and compliance checks.
- Help maintain audit readiness across all operational areas.
- Oversee compliance with company policies, procedures, and management systems.
Environmental Management
- Support the introduction and maintenance of the ISO 14001 Environmental Management System.
- Keep environmental procedures, records, and supporting documents up to date.
- Track and report environmental KPIs and sustainability goals.
- Assist with environmental compliance activities and continuous improvement projects.
- Provide environmental awareness training and guidance to employees.
Contractor & Facilities Management
- Put in place and maintain a contractor management process that meets health, safety, and environmental requirements.
- Monitor contractor performance and ensure safe work practices are followed.
- Act as the main contact for facilities management providers and support compliance-related activities linked to facilities.
Requirements
Essential qualifications
- A relevant third-level qualification in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Health & Safety, or a closely related field is required.
Essential experience and abilities
- Previous experience in a health and safety or EHS position within manufacturing, production, or food production is necessary.
- Hands-on experience with risk assessments and the application of suitable control measures.
- Sound knowledge of health and safety legislation and accepted best practice.
- Strong organisational, planning, and problem-solving capabilities.
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work across all levels of the organisation.
- Comfort working independently while balancing several priorities at once.
- A proactive, self-starting, and outcome-focused approach.
Desirable experience
- Exposure to ISO 45001 and/or ISO 14001 management systems.
- Internal Auditor qualification.
- Train the Trainer, Manual Handling Instructor, or similar relevant training certification.
- Experience delivering health and safety training and employee engagement initiatives.
