Job description

Overview

Orange County Government serves the public with a focus on integrity, honesty, fairness, and professionalism. The organization works to deliver forward-thinking policies and services that influence Central Florida and help shape the community’s future. It emphasizes a strong workplace culture built on high standards for service, organizational values, and employee satisfaction, and it operates with a commitment to equal opportunity in both employment and services.

The Water Reclamation Division handles wastewater treatment administration and reclaimed water production across three water reclamation facilities, with a combined treatment capacity of about 50 million gallons per day.

The division is looking for a self-directed, well-organized team-oriented professional to serve as an Environmental Compliance Technician/Inspector. This semi-skilled technical role involves inspecting and sampling grease traps, operating manual and automated sampling equipment, and reviewing customer as well as contract/franchise hauler activities for compliance with county codes and ordinances. The ideal candidate communicates well with customers, maintains a positive approach, works independently, and consistently meets deadlines and assignment requirements.

Job Summary

This role supports compliance work by inspecting and performing technical tasks to help ensure that Orange County sewer, solid waste, and recycling customers, along with contract/franchise haulers, follow applicable county ordinances. The position includes sampling and inspection duties for the users being regulated.

Work is completed with significant independence and is overseen by the Environmental Coordinator. Performance is evaluated through direct observation, reports, and the results produced.

Representative Duties

  • Examine customers and contract/franchise hauler vehicles to confirm adherence to recycling and solid waste rules.
  • Move, install, and configure automated sampling equipment at designated locations.
  • Inspect commercial and industrial sites and grease traps, then enter inspection results into a computer database each day.
  • Keep sample and inspection documentation accurate and readable, including chain-of-custody records and other daily paperwork.
  • Remove and reinstall sanitary sewer manhole covers when conducting inspections and sampling.
  • Prepare documentation of findings for the supervisor or relevant boards when enforcement action may be needed.

A high school diploma or equivalent is preferred.

Preference is given to applicants with basic knowledge of chemistry, biology, and mathematics.

A valid Florida driver’s license is required and must be maintained.
