Job description
About the role
This seasonal fixed-term opportunity sits within Ngāi Tahu Farming at Te Whenua Hou in Eyrewell Forest, North Canterbury. The position runs from 27 July 2026 through to 15 December 2026 and combines milk transport duties with practical calf rearing work at a newly established calf rearing facility connected to the dairy farms.
The role is designed to support day-to-day operations across both transport and animal care. You will be responsible for moving milk safely between farm and facility, while also helping calves get the best possible start through feeding, health monitoring, hygiene and general husbandry support.
Key duties
- Move milk between the dairy farms and the calf rearing site in a safe and timely manner.
- Operate vehicles in line with safety procedures and keep them maintained to a good standard.
- Prepare and deliver calf feed according to the established feeding programme.
- Observe calf growth, condition and overall wellbeing.
- Maintain high standards of cleanliness, sanitation and biosecurity across the facility.
- Assist with animal health treatments and welfare-focused care practices.
- Help with wider calf rearing tasks and general facility operations as needed.
- Work collaboratively with the farming and calf rearing teams.
Working pattern
This role follows a 5 days on, 2 days off roster. Working hours will change over the season depending on milk transport needs, calf numbers and broader operational demand. During the peak calving months of August and September, the expected workload is approximately 45 to 50 hours per week, with hours generally easing from October through December. Early starts will sometimes be required, and rosters will be shared ahead of time wherever practical. Flexibility is important during busy seasonal periods.
What is offered
- Competitive pay.
- Guidance and support using leading farming practices.
- A location within easy reach of Oxford, Rangiora, Kaiapoi and Christchurch.
- On-farm accommodation may be available if needed; this can be discussed during the process.
About you
You will bring a solid work ethic and a genuine commitment to animal welfare. You should be comfortable working in a practical, seasonal farming environment and able to handle both transport and livestock responsibilities.
