Job description
About IPX Power
IPX Power is a clean energy developer, owner, and operator of large-scale energy assets that supply affordable and dependable electricity to utilities and other customers. The company is expanding quickly, with 4.3 GW of solar PV and 8.8 GWh of battery storage either under construction or already operating, alongside additional projects in development.
IPX is a profitable and well-capitalized independent power producer that has delivered billions of dollars in industrial-scale clean energy infrastructure. It was recently established as a spin-out of Intersect following Intersect’s acquisition by Google, and is backed by TPG Rise Climate, Climate Adaptive Infrastructure, and Greenbelt Capital Partners.
The organization values collaboration, creativity, and operational discipline as it builds and runs a portfolio of renewables and storage assets at major scale.
About the Role
The Environmental Permitting and Compliance team is responsible for ensuring that projects are carried out and operated safely, responsibly, and in line with all environmental and permitting obligations. The team manages project authorizations, utility development requirements, land stewardship, compliance assurance, and environmental performance from construction through operations.
As the Environmental Compliance Lead, you will own construction-phase permit implementation, environmental and permitting compliance, and revegetation and restoration activities for assigned U.S. projects across construction and operations. The role includes project management, consultant coordination, contract negotiation, discretionary permit processing and acquisition, regulatory compliance, and permit modifications during operations. You will report to the Head of Environmental and Permitting and collaborate with EPCs, O&M providers, and internal teams across Development, Construction, Operations, Asset Management, Engineering, Finance, Community Engagement, EHS, Insurance, and Legal.
Key Responsibilities
- Set the compliance strategy for operating assets, including identifying and implementing systems to track permit obligations.
- Partner with the development permitting lead to oversee permit and compliance requirements for projects under construction.
- Handle environmental permit compliance for assets in operation.
- Deliver annual environmental training sessions for on-site operations teams.
- Direct external consultants supporting biological, noise, and other resource surveys, as well as diligence materials needed for environmental and permitting compliance, including coordination with legal counsel.
- Work with internal teams spread across different locations to prepare required reports, environmental documentation, and EPC/operator contract language so environmental approvals fully capture the scope of work.
- Conduct field visits when needed for construction monitoring, community engagement, or agency review activities.
- Oversee submissions and ongoing reporting to agencies including CDFW, CEC, BLM, USFWS, State and Regional Water Boards, local air districts, DTSC, CARB, TCEQ, and transportation departments.
- Participate in agency meetings to share post-construction survey findings and mitigation responsibilities.
- Represent the company in industry association forums and relay important insights to internal stakeholders.
- Maintain current construction and operational compliance schedules and budgets.
- Prepare internal presentations, communications, and approval materials for executive leadership and other stakeholders.
Skills and Experience
The ideal candidate brings strong written, verbal, and visual communication abilities, along with a strategic and adaptable approach to execution. You should be highly organized, comfortable managing multiple priorities, and able to work independently in a fast-moving, cross-functional environment.
Experience with ESA/CESA compliance for solar and storage projects is considered an advantage. The role also requires willingness to travel within the United States about twice per quarter, or more if needed.
Qualifications include a bachelor’s degree plus a relevant master’s degree, together with at least six years of experience in environmental compliance for utility-scale renewable energy infrastructure. Additional relevant experience may be accepted in place of a master’s degree or PhD.
Experience working with local, state, and federal land management, wildlife, and regulatory agencies, as well as environmental NGOs, Native American tribes, industry groups, and community members, is required. Prior involvement in politically or publicly sensitive projects is also important. Background in wildlife ecology is a plus.
