Job description

Role Overview

La Lumiere School is looking for a full-time English Teacher for the 2026-2027 academic year. The role is based in La Porte, Indiana, with an expected start in August 2026 and a ten-month appointment running from August through May. Compensation is competitive and will be aligned with the candidate’s experience.

The English program emphasizes critical reading, clear writing, effective speaking, and thoughtful participation in a literary and intellectual community. Students work with classic and contemporary texts, write regularly to learn and to communicate insights, and take part in discussion, reflection, analysis, and public speaking.

Teaching Focus

This position is best suited to an educator comfortable teaching upper-level high school students in literature, writing, and speaking-focused courses. The anticipated schedule may include Speech, AP English Literature and Composition, and junior/senior English seminar classes. Experience in theater, public speaking, performance, debate, or other student presentation settings is considered an advantage.

What the School Is Looking For

The ideal candidate will bring a confident classroom presence, a genuine appreciation for literature and language, and the ability to help students strengthen their skills as readers, writers, speakers, and critical thinkers. A strong fit will be able to create a discussion-based classroom, support close reading and analytical writing, and help students build clarity, poise, and voice in both spoken and written work.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Teach five class sections each semester.
  • Coach or supervise a co-curricular activity.
  • Advise a student group of about eight learners.

Qualifications

  • A bachelor’s degree in a relevant subject area is required; a master’s degree is preferred.
  • At least three years of secondary-level teaching experience is preferred.
  • Background in theater, public speaking, performance, debate, or similar presentation-based work is preferred but not mandatory.

Benefits and Compensation

Faculty pay is competitive and based on experience. For staff members living on campus, the school offers year-round housing and meals while school is in session for the employee and family as part of the benefits package. Additional benefits include an optional health plan, employer contributions to a TIAA-CREF retirement account, and access to professional development opportunities.

Appointment Details

This is a ten-month faculty appointment reporting to the Director of Academics and Student Life.

Application Instructions

Applicants should send a résumé, cover letter, and a list of three to five references to the Director of Academics and Student Life. References will be contacted only after the candidate gives permission.
