Job description
About the organisation
This position sits within a long-established not-for-profit that supports veterans, serving Defence personnel, and their families. The organisation has a strong footprint across Queensland and a history spanning more than 100 years. Its work focuses on delivering practical services and strengthening community connections so the veteran community can thrive after service.
About the role
Reporting to the Regional Manager, this role is focused on deepening the connection between the organisation’s regional office and a network of independently run local branches. Because each branch functions on its own, you will need to understand their specific needs and make sure they have the guidance, tools, resources, and training required to operate effectively, meet governance standards, and achieve meaningful outcomes for veterans.
This is a newly established role, and the first six months will largely involve travelling to branches, building relationships, listening carefully, and becoming a dependable partner to the network.
Key responsibilities
- Develop and sustain productive working relationships with branches and the regional office
- Offer support with future planning, strategic direction, and governance matters
- Assist with compliance obligations, including ACNC and other reporting requirements
- Spot operational, financial, and compliance issues and help drive solutions
- Contribute to member engagement and retention initiatives
- Encourage involvement in community activities and help connect branches with local councils, community organisations, and elected representatives
Working arrangements
You will be based in the Cairns office when you are not travelling to branch locations. The role operates Monday to Friday, with flexible starting and finishing times. Occasional weekend work may be needed from time to time, and this will be balanced with time off in lieu.
About you
The ideal candidate will bring a strong understanding of the Defence and veteran community, whether through service in the ADF, a close connection to Defence, or prior work with current or former serving members and their families. You should be comfortable building partnerships, influencing stakeholders, and working independently through complex situations with competing priorities.
You will also need the ability to interpret annual reports, basic legislation, and profit and loss statements, along with practical Microsoft Office capability at a basic to intermediate level. Experience working with volunteers is considered an advantage.
A current driver’s licence, access to a vehicle when required, and the ability to travel regionally are necessary. A valid Blue Card is required, or you must be eligible to obtain one.
