Job Summary

The Emergency Room Technician plays a vital role in supporting the operations of the Emergency Department by providing patient care assistance under the supervision of licensed nursing professionals. This position ensures the department runs smoothly by maintaining cleanliness, adequate supplies, and facilitating clear communication among the healthcare team.

Key Responsibilities

  • Carry out direct patient care in the emergency room by performing clinical tasks such as applying splints, inserting Foley catheters, monitoring blood glucose levels (accuchecks), recording vital signs, conducting EKGs, and inserting intravenous lines, following scope of practice guidelines and under licensed staff supervision.
  • Safely transport patients within the hospital to various units, procedural areas, or discharge points efficiently.
  • Ensure the emergency area is orderly and sanitized by adhering to infection control protocols, replenishing supplies, and verifying equipment functionality.
  • Engage in effective communication with patients, their families, and medical personnel, promptly alerting relevant staff to any changes or concerns related to patient conditions.
  • Accurately document patient care activities in the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) system.
  • Respond swiftly during emergencies to assist the healthcare team with necessary interventions to ensure patient safety.
  • Wear and utilize personal protective equipment (PPE) strictly following safety standards to protect self, patients, and staff.
  • Contribute to unit operations by handling clerical responsibilities such as managing communications, maintaining records, and providing administrative assistance when required.
  • Coordinate with ancillary departments and external agencies to ensure the continuity of patient care and smooth departmental workflow.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned, maintain consistent attendance, and adhere to all hospital policies and standards.

Qualifications

  • Completion of technical schooling in Nursing Assistant, EMT, Phlebotomy, or Medical Assistant programs is mandatory.
  • Preferred certifications include CNA (Certified Nursing Assistant), Basic EMT, Phlebotomy Technician, or Medical Assistant.
  • Clinical experience ranging from no experience up to one year is required.

Skills and Knowledge

  • Ability to maintain composure and think clearly in high-pressure, stressful scenarios.
  • Familiarity with emergency medical procedures or related medical training.
  • Understanding of safety protocols, sterile techniques, and infection prevention.
  • Competence in problem identification, analysis, and resolution.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
  • Knowledge of patient rights and healthcare laws such as HIPAA and EMTALA.
  • Capability to prioritize tasks according to the needs of the emergency unit, multitask effectively, and take initiative to support diverse requirements.

Licenses and Certifications

  • Required: EMT (Emergency Medical Technician) or Licensed Paramedic (LP).
  • Required: Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from American Heart Association (AHA), American Red Cross (ARC), or American Safety and Health Institute (ASHI).
  • Preferred: Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) or Phlebotomy Technician Certification (CPT).
